eHarmony sued for excluding gays.

This is a private company providing a ?type? of service so in my view they are not discriminating against homosexuals. However this could be compared to a restaurant that would refused service to homosexuals and in such an instance a lawsuit would be justified.

So what do you ATOTers think?

eHarmony sells itself with the success rate of their matching system; they will reject straight people if they don't think they'll be able to successfully match them with someone. Perhaps they feel that their system could not effectively match homosexual couples.

Discrimination is discrimination. It's exactly the same as refusing service to blacks, Asians, or people with disabilities.

And there is nothing wrong with discrimination in most cases. I'm sick of this PC bullcrap! Is it discrimination if I refuse to teach a guy with no arms to box? What about refusing to teach a mentally handicapped man to be a MMA fighter? Is it bad discrimination that I do not give guitar lessons to children? I just don't like working with them. Can we sue sports illustrated for refusing fat chicks for the swimsuit edition? My mom's doctor refused to see her after a car accident, she said she does not take accident cases because of the court time usually involved. Should my mom sue her? Should the military be required to take recruits with epilepsy? What about guys with handicaps that prevent them from doing basic training (like being in a wheelchair? Further more, can a guy in a wheelchair sue me for not having wheelchair access to my new stairmaster only gym buisness?

They do not want to target that demographic. I think NAMBLA should sue them for not offering a matching service for men to find little boys. I mean discrimination is discrimination after all.

private service, then can offer it to whomever they wish

conventional economics suggests they are the ones losing out by restricting their client base, but thats their problem

why do people make a big deal out of this

To finish my rant, the biggest question to ask is this. How does this hurt the gay community? The answer, it doesn't. In fact, it looks like the perfect buisness opportunity. Instead of suing, the guy should of gotten off his ass and made a website.

This should be tossed out shortly after it makes a trip across the first jduge's desk.

It's their own service. They could drop all male profiles from their registry and only allow males to pay for possible dates and would still be virtually untouchable legally.

I don't care. All I know is that I hate the old bastard who does the commercials for eharmony. God those commercials are annoying.

They should accept them, and then just match them with opposite sex partners. "Sorry, but that's all our software was designed to do." :p

Private businesses can do as they please, and potential customers can do as they please - including using other sites and services.

I hope that is in jest. Otherwise it is pretty much one of the dumbest things I have read in a LONG time.

It's a private company, and most have a right to refuse service agreement.

The gay's could start a smilar company excluding straights, so they should go do it.

Funny, I don't see sexual orientation in the civil rights act.

At any rate, I ask again: WHY would anyone want to do business with someone who doesn't like them, want them, and is only doing business with them under force of law???

And if you as a consumer have the right to not do business with anyone, for any reason, why should a business not be afforded that same right?

Finally, before someone jerks their knee, I am HARDLY "anti-gay."

Of course it's not in jest. You want the courts and the governments telling companies what services they're required to offer? Talk about a nanny state...

I'm sorry to tell you, but comparing homosexuals to blacks, Asians and people with disabilities is just plain stupid. Gays ARE NOT a different nationality, a minority or a different race.

All this 'protection' for the gay community...give me a ****** break. You make a choice to be a rug muncher or a noodle nuzzler and all of a sudden you want minority status. No one offers minority status for white guys who decide to be with a black woman or an asian woman who decides to be with a black guy or a European guy who decides to be with a latino woman. The race, gender, creed, et al of the person you decide to engage is sexual activity SHOULD NOT entitle you to 'minority' or 'protected' status.
