By David Gura

Egypt has decided to open its border with Gaza, following an Israeli raid on six ships. Linda Gradstein, reporting for NPR, says that, "if the border stays open, it will be a victory for the Islamist Hamas movement, which controls Gaza."

Earlier today, the Interior Ministry, run by Hamas, issued a statement, saying that the Rafah border crossing will remain open every day, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Dozens of Palestinians rushed to the border, waiting to be allowed into Egypt, Gradstein reports. Gaza only has two exits: one to Israel, the other to Egypt.

The border crossing has been opened only sporadically since Israel imposed a blockade on the Hamas government four years ago. Recently, Egypt has cracked down on the smuggling of everything from guns to car parts through a network of tunnels between Gaza and the country.

Yesterday, Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned "the killings committed by the Israeli Forces the morning of May the 31st onboard one of the ships of the convoy which was heading to Gaza to break the Israeli siege imposed on it."

The Spokesman expressed his grief and sympathy to the victims' families who loss [sic] their lives in order to support the Palestinian people and its cause.
The Egyptian move comes amid harsh international criticism of Israel. At an emergency meeting yesterday, the United Nations Security Council condemned the raid and called for an impartial investigation into the incident.

In turn, Avigdor Liberman, Israel's foreign minister, criticized the Security Council's statement. "The Security Council resolution is unacceptable and contributes nothing to the promotion of peace and stability in the Middle East," he said.

Israel says the violence was "pre-planned," and the flotilla was warned repeatedly that "the Gaza region is closed to maritime traffic." On its website, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs also points to "a cache of weapons used to violently attack the soldiers," discovered by Israeli Defense Forces.

Ban speaking outside of the International Criminal Court in Kampala, Uganda, had called on Israel to explain itself:

I am shocked by reports of killings and injuries of people on the boats carrying supplies for Gaza, apparently in international waters, in the early hours of this morning. I condemn this violence. We do not yet know the full facts yet. More than ten people appeared to have been killed and many more wounded. It is vital that there is a full investigation to determine exactly how this bloodshed took place. I believe Israel must urgently provide a full explanation.
Another vessel is expected to attempt to run the blockade today or tomorrow.

This was rather expected, though as the article mentions I also expect more ships to try to access the palestinian ports directly. Even if Israel is prepared to take a hard line, they are going to have a hard time keeping Egypt in the kitchen while the fires are going.

The endless cycle of .....reaction:reaction:reaction..... goes on and on until a Palestiniean state is established or the Palestinians are destroyed.

if weapons start getting funneled back into Gaza and Hamas resumes their rocket strikes on Israel, will it be the Israeli's fault when innocents die from the response strikes?

I always wonder if there has ever been a bigger collective stupidity acted out on such a large scale as this in human history. What is it about that region, is it the water?, that makes ALL the people in that region so stupid to comprehend that they are only fucking their own by keeping killing and/or stonewalling getting along with the other side?

Oh how very very stupid, first Israel confiscates Palestinians land and tosses Palestinians into concentration camps, and then says, them ingrate Palestinians are shooting rockets at us sweet little blameless thieves.. Then Israel says that if we don't starve them within an inch of their lives we will get rockets shot at us and Israelis are right.

Pretty soon we all lose track of what started the whole mess. But God no, surely not, we can't possible do anything to help the Palestinians or do anything in terms of ending or solving the conflict. Greshams law of Common sense, stupidity drives common sense out of circulations so everyone gets to wallow in misery forever.

Human stupidity now, Human stupidity forever.

But in terms of the Israeli blockade of Gaza, it was a short term strategy designed to force Hamas out of power, and as an Israeli strategy, its did exactly the opposite. That was apparent two years ago, so why do we still have a Gaza blockade now???????????????

how much different would the world be today if we gave the Jews Utah?

It would be pretty much the same, except it would just be arabs killing each other instead of Jews and therefore would get no media attention.

Finally a good idea, as the first thing the Israeli Jews would do is to demonize Utah Mormons, confiscate their land, and drive them all into the great salt flats of Utah.

Its the Israeli mantra, why share anything when you can have it all for yourselves.

What do you mean would be?

Saudis are carpet bombing Yemen right now, no one says shit.
Black September in Jordan?
Hama Massacre?
Iran/Iraq war?
etc etc etc

World is full of antisemites who's singular focus is Israels destruction and that starts with denying her right to self defense and condemning every act.

want the blockade gone? kick the terrorists out.

it's not rocket surgery. electing terrorists and attacking a neighboring country has consequences, to paraphrase Barbara Boxer.

we did some terrible things to the native americans, but I'd be hard pressed to defend a reservation launching rockets at Washington DC.

The only ones whom lose track of what started the whole mess are people like you, whom want to conveniently forget the facts in order to suit your own anti-semitic ramblings.

Now Loki asks, "want the blockade gone? kick the terrorists out."

Ok loki, give me that magic wand and I will wave it, poof they will be gone.

Now what, we will still have 1.5 million Palestinians living in a Gaza concentration camp, and are you so damn stupid as to think Israel will do a damn thing to alienate their suffering even if they turn non violent like the West bank? All that non-violence has gotten the West bank is never ending Israeli settlement.

Or give those suckers an even break. It has not happened in 62 years and without the international community demanding better, it never will. Learn that and live it. A just State of Israel we would all like to support cannot be build on the past Israeli sins of Palestinian land theft and exploitation.

As for Egypt, they do not want to be the bad guys and quite understandably can't be asked to assimilate the Palestinian refugee problem they did not create. The Palestinian problem is something Israel 100% created and now Israel is 100% responsible for solving. And all Israel does is repress, repress, and stall for 62 damn stupid years.

how should Israel have responded to Gaza electing terrorists to lead their government and launching rockets at Israel?

the blockade seems outright generous compared to what any other country would have done had one of their neighbors attacked them.

Do you really think playing the anti-Semitic card makes all Israeli problems go away. This whole Israeli thing has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with human nature greed.

Right, which is why when Israel offered the palestinians their own sovereign contiguous state with all of the land they demanded including part of Jerusalem, they turned it down and initiated the intifada instead.

Yes... but greed of whom? People seem to forget how Israel came to be. PART of the land was given by international community to them. MOST of the land ISRAEL BOUGHT from the palestinians with way above market prices. Palestinians took the money and ran with it. But after they saw, that Israel turned the wast desert into a florishing land, they became envious, and wanted it back. Starting a war and loosing it... If you read the history, surely you cannot say Israel is the greedy one.
