Chaos has erupted in the Ukrainian parliament during a debate over the extension of the lease on a Russian naval base in Ukraine.

The chamber's speaker had to be shielded by umbrellas as he was pelted with eggs, while smoke bombs exploded and politicians brawled.

But the debate continued and the chamber ratified the lease extension.

Kiev has prolonged the lease on the Sevastopol base by 25 years in return for cheaper supplies of Russian gas.

What do you think of Ukraine extending the lease? Does Ukraine really have a choice if they want enough gas?

No real choice. If you need Russian gas you have to give them what they want. Ukraine is not the only country to be held hostage by the threat of a cutoff.

Don't have much insight into the politics of the region, but can't blame them for thinking this is shady.

The Russian fleet is essentially a rusty floating junkyard these days. If the Russians want to give up some cheap gas to keep it parked in the Ukraine before it gets turned into razor blades then I'd say the Ukrainians came out on top.

With that layout the Russians could be in Munich by winter! (Think Diplomacy)
