FDA, CDC, and state partners conducted a traceback investigation and found many of these restaurants or events received shell eggs from a single firm, Wright County Egg, in Galt, Iowa. FDA is currently conducting an extensive investigation at the firm in Iowa. The investigation involves sampling, records review and looking for potential sources of contamination, such as feed. As the investigation continues, updates will be made available.

On August 13, 2010, Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa, conducted a nationwide voluntary recall of shell eggs that it had shipped since May 19, 2010 to food wholesalers, distribution centers and foodservice companies in California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. These companies distribute nationwide.

The recalled shell eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.

Got a call from Costco to return the eggs I bought Wednesday, Aug 18th.
But the plant code and date code does not match the affected list. Already cooked 3 of them. Shouldn't the act of cooking them end up killing the salmonella?

yes, that is why there is a voluntary recall. just don't eat the eggs raw or sunny side up or something and you'll be fine.

Yep, cooking them renders them safe. But they need to be fully cooked. If you cook them and leave them runny like sunny side up or over easy they're still potentially dangerous. But frankly, you're more likely to be killed in a traffic accident returning the eggs than you are to be killed by eating the eggs. The risk of salmonella poisoning is incredibly low.

Update.... I'm going to die, eggs are on the recall list....

Hillandale Farms of Iowa Conducts Nationwide Voluntary Recall of Shell Eggs Because of Possible Health Risk

Eggs are distributed under the following brand names: Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms, and Sunny Meadow in 6-egg cartons, dozen-egg cartons, 18-egg cartons, 30-egg package, and 5-dozen cases. Loose eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Wholesome Farms and West Creek in 15 and 30-dozen tray packs. The loose eggs may also be repackaged by customers.
The only eggs affected by this recall have plant numbers P1860 or P1663 and Julian dates as follows:

P1860 – Julian dates ranging from 099 to 230

P1663 – Julian dates ranging from 137 to 230

Only eggs with these plant numbers are affected - even though the brand name may be the same.

Make sure you cook them ALL the way, and wash your hands after handling the eggs. That should do it.

But the stores would rather be safe than sorry. If they gave this advice, and someone didn't understand what "cook fully" meant, got sick, and died because they had a compromised immune system, HELLO lawsuit!

My wife bought Lucerne eggs at Safeway the other day. Fortunately, the codes on the package are not the ones being recalled.

We got some of the recalled eggs but we're not going to return or dispose of them. Just cook the damn things thoroughly. It always irks me when they recall and destroy millions of pounds of perfectly good food such as ground beef just because 1/2 percent of the population is too stupid to properly prepare and cook meat.

I got the robo-call from Costco about this yesterday. The eggs were of course all gone as they were bought about a month ago.

Another reason why Corporate farms are a bad idea.

Corporate farms are one of the reasons behind very high production. It's more efficient. This way, everyone can afford eggs.

Personally, I have 20 egg laying chickens and have more eggs than I know what to do with.

I read that the recalled eggs will be pasteurized to kill the salmonella and repacked. I wonder how safe that is.

Everyone can Afford Eggs, Corporate Farm or not. What Corporate Farming has done is killed the Family Farm(aka Small Business) and turned isolated outbreaks into National outbreaks.

How much beer do I need to drink after I eat the eggs to sufficiently neutralize the salmonella with alcohol? I'm too lazy to check what I already got.
