After about 5 years of buying from Newegg, totaling several thousand dollars (5? 9? who knows), I asked for the second time ever for a price adjustment when their own search function gave a price of 39 AR for a video card, and it popped up as 59 AR in cart.

After waiting 25 minutes (and actually, very very calmly as I had work to do, and realize its the holiday shopping season), I was told "No."

Three minutes later I found it for 39 AR / freeship on Amazon.

I know where I will start my search next time.

They are now a big company that has TV commercials and grandmas talking about the toaster that is on sale there. They will never be the same Newegg we always loved.

Wait, so you went to newegg.com, did a search, and the item you were looking for popped up as $39 in the search, but when you added it to the cart, it showed $59?

Correct. Their service rep basically said "sorry, the cart price is the final price and we do not correct such errors. fullstop."

I understand that can happen I guess.... but you would think they *might* value loyalty enough for a small price adjustment. It's not like it was a 6990 for $100 or something.

I noticed the same thing yesterday while looking at RAM. It was $30 in the search, but $60 in my cart. I didn't ask for a PM though.

but i don't understand why they wouldn't hnor the OP's request. it showed one price then in the basket as another. wouldn't that be illegal also?

I don't think it can be considered a bait and switch (firstly because they are changing the price, not the product), and they could just defend it as the buyer clicking add to cart after they made a price change. It probably happens a lot.

hmm then what's to stop a company from doing it often and hoping idiots don't notice?

Check latter and see if they didn't fix it OP. maybe it is really a mistake. but if they haven't after a day i would say its intentional.

Newegg has fallen. it used to be my 1st stop and only stop. now its like 3rd on the list anymore.

i use newegg for reference searching. If it exists on Amazon, i'll always order through Amazon. Better CS and prime.

In fact, my last few hardware purchases were from Amazon. A few 500GB laptop drives, memory for my computers, power supply.

amazon is getting to be #1. but i do a google search then search the store.

almost to the point that i want amazon prime.

I'm having a similar issue with them over a warranty. Their product page says 3 years...but the manufacturer says one year.

"We'll look into it and get back to you in 3-5 business days."

🙄

Definitely NOT the "eggcellent" customer service we've all come to expect from Newegg.

ditto about prime i had a free trial a while back for 3 months and i freaking loved it. amazon and newegg are pretty much my go to places for everything.

The only thing i have not been able to find, is a site that has as good filtering as newegg has. i love being able to filter down my list by almost any criteria that is specific to the item i am looking for and i have not been able to find anything even remotely close to it anywhere else which is why newegg still is #1 for me with amazon a close second.

i spend hundreds there a month on misc. parts etc...

i had the opposite problem yesterday... it was showing free batman when browsing through the Nvidia cards, I picked out the GTX 560 I wanted and added to cart, but no batman!! waited for a customer rep to chat with, told them it wasnt adding to cart, they said that promo ended, but gave it to me anyway...

Ideally they should lock the item from being added to any carts before they change a price, and have it redirect anyone with the old price cached to another page stating that it expired.

They don't have off hours to be able to change prices so there probably isn't much they can do. When I used to do web price adjustments, it was constantly changing all day. We would just mark the item out of stock when we price adjusted though, but occasionally people still got orders through at the wrong price.

Did you have to login and use a promo code to get the special price? Newegg does that with a lot of "sale" items.

i started looking on amazon about 1 year ago and have not regretted it one bit and now i have their credit card where you get points for buying stuff.

This. Newegg for good pictures and a few extra reviews. When it comes time to purchase, even if it's a few dollars more, I will normally go with Amazon due to their remarkable CS. Also, Newegg's return policy is complete and utter crap compared to what it used to be. If I'm unhappy with a purchase or the purchase is DOA, it should be a full refund as the default.

I've also spent thousands (maybe tens of thousands) with Newegg over the years. They used to be my 1st and only stop for computer parts. Pretty much use Amazon.com, Microcenter, or Monoprice.com for anything computer related now. I buy from Newegg.com when they have a good deal and that's about it anymore. Since I'm on a bitching roll, their marketing emails are almost to the point of being annoying enough to unsubscribe totally from them.

Fun fact: My first purchase there was on 5/14/2001. $178 for a GeForce 2 Pro 64 MB

Their search engine (Endeca) uses a different data source then the product pages do. It takes forever to build the data cube for Endeca so there's a lag time to get it updated after a change has been made to the product itself. I wonder if they tried implementing "incremental updates" in Endeca.

Talking to newegg customer service is like talking to a rock.

When I called about a billing issue on my debit card, the person refused to even look at my account. All I was told was they do not make billing mistakes.

Called back 3 or 4 times and was told the same thing by all of the reps, none of them would even look at my account or the charges on my card.

After about 4 days of calling I finally got someone to look at my account, they saw the issue and fixed it. I do not understand what is so difficult about just looking at my account. Once someone looked at my account, it was like click, click and it was fixed. To bad it took 4 days and several calls to even get someone to look.

newegg is fine if you have to order something...if it has to get to the hands of CS, you're screwed (it's like the online Fry's or Best Buy when it comes to that).

So who is the "new" newegg?

Probably Newegg post 2006 or 2007. That's approximately the year Amazon Prime became a good deal to me due to an increased number of purchases from them over Newegg. The switch to UPS as a shipper over FedEx, a focus on more than just computer parts, increasingly more strict, anti-consumer return policies, and a bump in prices once they got established all contributed to their downfall with me from 2005-2006.
