I don't mean to be rude, but that looks like something a small child would want. Like those Barbie computers. I'd be embarrassed to let others see that setup.

If you only need one 5" drive and can use microATX, I don't think there is a better design out there than the A100 series - the same internal chassis is also used in the Ahanix Blu I/II and the Maxtop compact desktops. The similar sized Chenbro is also nice.

I'll admit that the microATX machines have always interested me, but I *have* to go full ATX to get two 5.25" drive bays, to have enough expansion cards, and for the plain and simple fact that Intel is providing a full ATX motherboard. I don't want to go through the hassle of finding someone to trade that Intel board for something in a micro flavour... then I have to worry about cooling a 3GHz processor (not overclocked) in an even smaller machine!

No... I think the Antec Overture is still lookin' like the perfect case.... if only it weren't so darned expensive. (On the plus side, I hear nothing but great things about Antec cases and power supplies!)

It'll look real snazzy here on my desk with my black 17" Trinitron on top - and my monitor will actually be LOWER on the machine than it would be on my current riser.

*admit it... you guys like the monitor lower so you can cheat and look at the keyboard when you type. :p :D ;)

So... what exactly aint for wimps? :)

Trying to gain masculinity by having a big, manly, phallic "tower" doesn't work. You'll still be the same man, desktop or tower - even if you do top off the tower with a horned viking helmet. ;)

Okay, you're the typical guy who never grew up with desktops. Some of us remember when desktops were all there were! I still prefer having the machine in front of me, rather than down on the floor to get kicked around and having to bend down to access my optical/floppy drives.

Having the tower on the desk actually wastes MORE space... a desktop machine sits under the monitor where the real estate is already gone anyways!

And, BTW... who said ANYTHING about onboard video, eh?

When I'm cogitating on cases, etc, I visit this Page . I may not discover a solution, but I may find that other pressing matters may have arisen in the interim...

Actually the desktop design has better cooling potential than a tower particularly for the expansion cards and CPU. That has been well known for a long time. Tower shape has other advantages that often outweigh the poorer cooling. And the top edge of the viewable area of the screen should be just below eye level when seated properly for keyboarding with good posture - also well known.

"The old guidelines that recommended that the monitor be placed at eye level were based in part on the belief that the resting position of the eyes (considered to be the most comfortable gaze angle) is 15° below the horizontal (Morgan, Cook, Chapanis, and Lund 1963). New evidence (and some that has been around for a while) shows that, while the eyes might be most comfortable with a 15° gaze angle when looking at distant objects, for close objects they prefer a much more downward gaze angle (Kroemer 1997). Figure 1 shows the optimum position for the most important visual display, 20 - 50° below the horizontal line of sight, according to the International Standards Organization (ISO 1998).

As we saw from the above demonstrations, a downward gaze angle improves our ability to accommodate and converge. Ripple (1952) found that subjects over age 42 increased their ability to accommodate by an average of 25.5% by directing their eyes downward in the "usual reading position." Krimsky (1948) observed, "when looking upwards, the eyes tend to diverge...and when they look down, the effort to converge is much easier." Tyrell and Leibowitz (1990) found that a low gaze angle resulted in reduced headaches and eyestrain."

You're supposed to look down at your monitor

Edit: Please also note that the same article addresses concerns about posture and, in particular, neck problems associated with improper (not low enough) monitor placement. It's right after the segment I quoted above.

WT. Can you imagine trying to keep that Rig cooled with a XP 3200, ATI 9800 pro, 120 g HDD, and a burner all runing at once. Where is the AC vent. No heating needed in the play room this winter. Yea Ha.

I'll have to read more later, but that looks good so far.

Maybe it's a good time to mention that I'm 6'3" and even with a riser, I'm STILL looking downwards towards my monitor. If my monitor were on the desk instead of 6" higher, I'd be down quite uncomfortably. Maybe if I were a lil' stubby guy the whole "desktop" thing might suck. ;)
