In all seriousness, justin is right - please don't feed the troll. If we decline to respond, Rip's ability to pollute this place will go away completely. Don't respond to his threads or posts, for the good of this board.

But there's millions of people in America... 178 seems like a low number to me :D

I think we should keep this one on the DL for now though, if Keryr gets elected, this seems like impeachment material!

Oh, and I almost forgot:

The Lottery in 1972 were for men who would have been called for duty in 1973. However no new draft orders were called after 1972. I'm the same age as Edwards and my number was 125 and I wasn't called for duty. Sounds like Rip is talking out his ass again!

Uhh, George Bush needed help to get into the Air National Guard, correct?! By the numbers he should have been knee deep in rice paddy. Last I heard the son's of mill workers didn't have that kind of pull back in the 70s.

John Edwards, however, did neither, enlisting instead in Clemson University, where, according to spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri, "He had a little fun . . . drinking beer with buddies . . . smoking marijuana a few times."
Uhh, didn't Bush spend much of his time having fun, drinking beer with buddies . . . other activities . . . well at least up until he had to be tested . . . oops, nevermind.

"His campaign would not provide more specifics other than to say Edwards' occasional marijuana use continued through law school but stopped after that," the Charlotte Observer reported in July.
Hmm Edwards quit toking (allegedly) by his mid-20s. Bush pulled it together at 40. Do you really want to go down this road?

PS . . . why not give people the courtesy of links? Not to imply you aren't stating the "facts" but some of us prefer to read it ourselves.

So what then? Edwards = Bush.

Nah nah-I was #355. The only lottery I was ever happy in losing. For those of you too young to remember, they actually broadcast the drawing of this lottery on the radio-like a pro sports lottery gone horribly wrong. My roommate's girlfriend called up that night, said my roomie got a high number but I think you got #33. I remember very little of the next 24 hours, but it involved an excessive amount of intoxicants.

Anything over the cut off limit qualifies as a high number-there were effective two classes of numbers, those who were going to be drafted and those that weren't. If Edwards was in the same year as me I think that number ended up being around 80-90. If the limit was 90, then 91 is as good as 365.

Rip, you really should edit your heading to admit your mistake, and retract your false accusation of lying.

PS-for those of you who think it was unpatriotic not to want to be drafted/go to Nam in the early 70s, at that time the only issue being negotiated was the shape of the conference table at the Paris peace talks. North Vietnam wanted the Viet Cong treated as a partner, the USA refused (ie, a four sided table versus three). This stalemate lasted literallyfor months, and many needless deaths. It was a certainty that US was going to pull out of Vietnam, the only question was when and under what conditions.

EDIT: In 1972 it was impossible for an ordinary Joe to join either the Reserves or the Coast Guard. I throughly investigated each possibility. Bush's method was only available to Fortunate Sons (to quote the CCR song).

Thump----Isn't it so typical of the right wing hit squads--they make outrageous attacks on Kerry--most of them are entirely fabricated--but they get them out in the public view and thus they have telling effects. I heard this morning that Kerry has fallen behind in the polls do largely to the Swift Vote Hit Squad attacks. Rove is a master Propogandist.

LOL!

Huh - I wonder who they both were before they were banned. Runner20 hit the ground running here to such an extent that I'm sure he was a previously banned member. I didn't even realize he had been banned, and now he's been banned again, under another username. GeneralGrievous, maybe?

If Edwards had been a real American he would have joined the Marines and been one of the last to die in 'Nam.

You guys just don't understand the nature of sacrifice. It means putting your ass on the line when Johnson and Nixon asked for it.

Edwards got a deferment. Why didn't he just say that rather than lying about getting a high draft number?

I haven't responded because I was out playing golf today getting some fresh air - something some of you guys think about doing once in a while.

I shot an 80 by the way. Missed a lousy 3 1/2 ft putt on the last hole to miss getting a 79.:disgust:

I played pretty well execpt for two double bogeys - one on the front and one on the back.

Once again, Rip, you exhibit that near perfect cranio-rectal interface for which you've become famous- Nixon ended all student deferments in 1971...

Just the first source I could find-

http://www.rense.com/general52/chenn.htm

Having been of draftable age at the time, I can tell you that Edwards' number was high, particularly considering that his local draftboard had lots of working class young guys to shanghai, and that the war was winding down at that point in time. I'd bet his local board didn't even get halfway to him, if they were even presented with a quota to fill, at all... Having a "high number" meant you didn't have to sweat it, and had no relationship to the relative numerical placement beyond that. 178 was every bit as good as 365...

Don't try to think, just stick with your usual cut/paste of braindead for dubya agitprop and innuendo...

It was, of course, impossible that he had a deferment and a high draft number.

Do you think Kerry chides Edwards for having received a deferment, too? This is interesting--Cheney, Edwards, and Kerry all requested deferments...yet one is out on the trail criticizing people who received one (or 5)...isn't there an 'H' word for this type of nonsense?
