It's been awhile since I checked on college tuition because my daughter was born quite a few years after my boys, but am I the only one who thinks the cost of going to college is ridiculous?

Georgetown: $43K
Brandeis: $38K
Wake Forest: $32K

Are we getting the picture? These are today's prices! Good grief.... scary stuff....

Now that my stock portfolio has turned into mush, I'm a bit worried about having to go back to work. (Now, there's a scary thought.)

By the time I buy the kid a car, incidentals, and pay for 4 years at GU or BU (her two choices today) I'll be close to $200K lighter in the wallet.

This is scary. I may have to use the same bike for the next 6 years. My only hope is that there is a man out there dumb enough to marry her as a Freshman. 🙂

Sheezh, my son went to Mary Washington and we didn't have to pay half as much.

Why is this happening?

Should I blame Bush, or this Clinton's fault too? 🙂

I dunno....I thought it was just in CA that these problems exist. I just found out I need to pay 292.50 extra to cover summer fees (UCI) and that Fall 2004 will increase by ~800

You'd think to jump start the economy you'd rely on those with advcaned skills so cutting on education would be a big no-no 😉

Even where I work the professors are writing extra grants like crazy to cover the losses because no one likes the whole cutback in funding

As for whose fault....its Saddams 😛
 
Blame both of them, after all blaming one leads to blaming another. 😉

My parents made me pay for college, rent, and my car. I just went to community college first, got myself a decent scholarship, went state college. And here I am today.
 
Most prestigious private schools have a lot of financial aid available. My undergrad cost over $40k/year, but they give out tons of aid. It was cheaper for me to go there than an out of state public school.

I'm a recent college graduate and I'm still continuing my college education right now.

You can attribute (for the most part), the rising costs of MY education to government subsidizing. Thats probably the easiest identifiable reason.

If you want someone to blame for that, there is only leftist policies to blame.

You must understand that President Bush has had to deal with the recession Clinton left us with (thanks, pal).. and also the weakened security and ignoring the threats of JIHAD from Bin Laden in the 90s that led to 9/11 which further depressed the economy.

But no fear, Bush has done wonders with the economy given all these conditions. Things are actually doing very well.
As every liberal gasps... Tax cuts DO seem to work! 😀

College costs are rising so fast because schools cant quit spending money.

Why do they need to go with the new edition of a book every year?

these books are increasingly costing over 100 dollars each..which is crazy.

Or in the case of Schools like Stanford, they hire high priced Nobel Prize winners to be on their faculty.

something tells me this person will not blame Bush for any of the bad things that carry over into Kerry's term come this November ( 😉 ) in terms of economy and Iraq War...

Why go to a school that costs that much for undergrad? I suppose if you are rich or can get massive scholarships, but otherwise, that's such a waste for undergrad.

You've got to be kidding, right? It amazes me that blame is always placed on a president for a simple fact of life - economic cycles occur. Things go well for a while, the economy grows, then a series of completely different and not necessarily related things happen, and a recession occurs. It's just the way of things. Economic growth cannot be sustained forever. There are economic factors that can be controlled to a limited extent, interest rates for example (Greenspan, I believe has done an excellent job overall), but then there are completely uncontrollable non-economic external factors, i.e. 9/11, Enron/Tyco scandals, etc. Should George Bush Sr. be blamed for the recession that Reagan's policies left him? I'm not pro-Bush, pro-Clinton, pro-Kerry, I just feel that this simple fact of life needs to be pointed out.

As for the original thread, college tuition has been growing faster than income for some time now. Here's some interesting articles:

If the private universities continue to make tuition unaffordable for potential college students, and these students flock to cheaper city/state public institutions, eventually private schools will miss out on some great minds, and perhaps even fall behind public universities in academic rankings. At that point, why would a student choose them? It will all balance out eventually. If top academic institutions become financially elitist, they will not be top academic institutions for very long.

EDIT: The second article actually discusses trends at public universities only. I didn't realize that until I read it the second time around. 😱

When the government provides subsidized education it produces artificial competition for the private education sector. This distorts the market for education. Plain and simple.



More reasons why public education sucks.

Poor answer (no pun intended). I can't speak for private schools, but most public schools have been raising tuition to account for lower levels of state funding. Our current legislators do not believe in funding higher education at the same levels as their predecessors. Whether that is good or bad is a separate discussion.
