Tupac actually had some good poetry.

That's simply an opinion. Personally I don't agree (and I'm a Tupac fan).

Such a shame that you think it is beneath your lilly white children in their safe, middle class neighborhood that isn't in the middle of some ghetto in Compton LA or Bronx NY, to learn about a Rapper that was actually an intelligent guy and liked to write poetry in his spare time.

I never said anything about being beneath...it is simply not appropriate to teach in English class.

And, I'd much rather have my kids reading Maya Angelou than Mark Twain. So funny that Maya was criticized for her grammatical choices in some of her poems and writings, but Mark Twain can write like a kindergartner at times and he's a literary genius.

Again you are talking my "first thing that came to mind/random example" to an extreme.

I secretly harbor racist views,

racist views.

I secretly harbor racist views,
I don't think asians drive well.

I'm not your brotha and I'm not a "brotha"

I think we all have little bit of racists in us. Nothing wrong with that. It only becomes a problem when people start hating/killing each other.

I would be the first to make fun of my race.....even nationality.

No, I am not. I would much rather have my children reading Maya Angelou, than Mark Twain.

How is it not acceptable to read an article about Tupac in class, again?

Its not like they had a project where they needed to come up with a witty response to "Hit em up"....

Vdub why is your daughter being allowed to go to this terrible school!? This is outrageous! :D

You should ground her for this.

You must learn to control your closest racism. So that you don't kill anyone.

If you can't understand, chances are it's not even worth trying.

I didn't say it was not acceptable. I said it was funny and one can say inappropriate. Tupac is mostly known for his music/lyrics. Go ahead, listen to his lyrics and tell me how that applies to English.

Its not like they had a project where they needed to come up with a witty response to "Hit em up"....

hehe

Your posts are all too predictable at this point. Nice try

Mark Twain was just an off the top of my head that make it's way into my original post. Nothing less/nothing more.

Most of these kids don't even know who Tupac was. Heck, most don't have the slightest clue about the golden years of rap/hip hop as they are too busy listening to the garbage they give them these days.....

Regardless, I still fail to see how Tupac fits/makes it to our kids education materials. But as I was posting this I had a feeling these are the sort of responses I would get. hehe

It reminds me of teaching reading to adults.

If you use "See spot run", they won't pay attention and may forget the lesson completely.

But if you use "See spot grow", referring to an STD, they'll never forget it. ;)

My English teacher used rap lyrics all the time in Secondary school to give us examples of puns, metaphors, similes, personification, etc. I still love her for that, and she was one of the strictest teachers in the school also.

Way to take it to the extreme.

And you have NEVER EVER laughed at ANY racial joke and are a leader of war on racism right?

Quote me where I've ever posted that there's "Nothing wrong with a little racism."

kthx

Considering you're not an English teacher, poet, or historian, your opinion is practically worthless in this matter, don't you think?

"Go ahead and listen" doesn't answer the question at all. Nice dodge.

He actually went from "I'm not racist" to "What's wrong with a little racism?"

Welp, there's the thread.

It's weird they do a quiz on an article instead of just an in-class exercise.

At that age it's not uncommon to do exercises in reading comperehension of an article, getting information out of an article, analyzing it, fast reading etc.
The fact that it's about tupac doesn't matter: it's a newspaper/magazine article and the objective is checking the students' ability to read a newspaper critically and get information out of it and not just as entertainment.

So they probably just took a cultural article to make it more appealing to young girls, although teachers always fail at this, because that era is gone, so you're testimony to a young teacher failing to keep in touch with teen culture.

I think more important topics should be used when picking out the articles but it's not really a big deal.

Self-ownage nominee...

I guess it all comes down to your and my definition of racism. To you it might be "I hate people of certain color"

What I was talking about was more of "Asians suck at driving" type of a thing. Nothing wrong with pointing out funny things about other races.

And if you say you have absolutely 0 racism in you (even a little/humorous kind of way)....you are simply lying.

Don't try to turn it around you dug your own grave with your comments about your kids being middle class and not going to school in some ghetto in the middle of Compton. Seemingly, they are too good to be reading about Tupac in some article. They'd better be reading Mark Twain like Middle class, non-ghetto schoolkids do.

What was all that hoopla for?

"(Ah, yes, but, thank you, I'll take Shakespeare over Toni Morrison any day.)

So the debate continues. And in the midst of it, I read an Associated Press story reporting that the San Francisco school board has ruled "that students must read books by non-white authors and also that classics by William Shakespeare and Geoffrey Chaucer are optional." According to the AP, one student said, "I read all these dead white men, and I'm tired of it."

And another student (poor baby) said, "I'll tell you what Chaucer means; it means subtitles are required."

Too bad, kiddo. It's what we call learning."

To Read, Or Not To Read Dead White Males

OP,

Didn't you get the memo?

Dead white guys are so politically incorrect.

For your sins, you'll have to visit the Diversity Committee to get your mind right.

I mean you probably also read George Orwell didn't you? Looks like you didn't get the correct message from it.
