Daughter is a freshman in high school.

So I'm looking thru my daughters grades yesterday and under English I noticed "quiz on Tupac".

:scratching my head:

I ask her if it was an essay or something, idea she came up with? She said "no, it was something they were teaching us about. You know Dad he was an actor and....."

When she was done.

"Sweetheart,I would like to remind you that I grew up in the 90s and listened to Hip Hop.....I know exactly who he is and his accomplishments"

Tupac? Really? How about Mark Twain or some thing....jesus

I told my wife about it and she was in shock (not that kind of "helicopter parent shock", she likes his music as well.

PS. we live in a middle class town. So it's not like we are in Compton LA or Bronx NY right in the middle of the ghetto. Most of the kids in the school she attends is white.

Before anyone jumps on the racial band wagon. My opinion would be no different if they were teaching her about Eminem in the English class.

I'm thinking about submitting it to Failblog now.....

Exactly. Personally I didn't pay much attention to mark twain.

If it was an exercise on history, hit failblog, but if it was an exercise on writing and perhaps doing research, it could well be a good one.

Mark Twain was just an off the top of my head that make it's way into my original post. Nothing less/nothing more.

Most of these kids don't even know who Tupac was. Heck, most don't have the slightest clue about the golden years of rap/hip hop as they are too busy listening to the garbage they give them these days.....

Regardless, I still fail to see how Tupac fits/makes it to our kids education materials. But as I was posting this I had a feeling these are the sort of responses I would get. hehe

As a parent I used to worry about this crap. Stuff like the English Lit. final that involved drawing pictures to illustrate how a story made you feel. Then I decided to stop worrying about the decline of western civilization and just enjoy it.

I'm not really worried though. I just thought it was funny and ridicules.

I just got an email back from the teacher and they confirmed it was part of their "Education department" choices etc.

"The Tupac article is from a booklet that the English Department has of nonfiction articles on different topics that ask the students to answer multiple choice questions about the article-"

I don't have a problem with teaching kids about 20th century musicians any more or less than 19th century authors. What's important is they they learn to read and write, and get practice doing so.

The problem is a bunch of 30-somethings are trying to come up with engaging, fresh, relevant content. I mean, Tupac? Seriously?

Yeah I hate black culture SO much. That's why 80s rap/90s hip hop remains one of my favorite kinds of music.

Although I do prefer biggie.....

Tupac actually had some good poetry.

Such a shame that you think it is beneath your lilly white children in their safe, middle class neighborhood that isn't in the middle of some ghetto in Compton LA or Bronx NY, to learn about a Rapper that was actually an intelligent guy and liked to write poetry in his spare time.



And, I'd much rather have my kids reading Maya Angelou than Mark Twain. So funny that Maya was criticized for her grammatical choices in some of her poems and writings, but Mark Twain can write like a kindergartner at times and he's a literary genius.

after reading through this thread with more of the explanation, i have no clue how you can think this is an "education fail".

wish when i was back in school i read articles and shit about tupac/biggie rather than about shakespeare and other people i don't even care about or had no interest in.
