Ok, this is my thought on the whole HDTV thing, please hear me out, do not ridicule but enlighten me.

I've been going back and forth with the wife about a new TV. She would prefer a new ~46" LCD for our living room while moving our current set to the family room downstairs. The down side is, we are limited in space in our living room and the LARGEST we can physically fit in the "TV Spot" is 43" wide which equates to around a 46" diagonal screen.

My issue is, we currently have a 1080i Westinghouse (forget the exact model) in the living room already and for the price it is still a great TV. I just can't see spending the amount of money on a similar size TV for the living room only to go from a 37" to a MAX 46" screen. We rarely watch anything HDTV anyway since we have basic cable and most of our viewing is cartoons and such for the kids.

My plan is to drop down to a 720p or 1080i "older model" DLP for our family room downstairs and just keep the current 1080i 37" westy upstairs. That way we can get a much larger screen for our $ since the whole HDTV doesn't matter that much anyway.

Thoughts? Am I way off base here? I just can't see spending the money to get 1080p, especially since it's something we'll likely not take advantage of.

if you have no interest in HTPC, bluray, games, or any HD content whatsoever then just get the largest display for your money.

if you barely watch HD, get a samsung. They have some of the best up conversion sets.

I got a Sony....its good, but the usp conversion is just alright.

The only thing that I do that is remotely HD is Wii and Xbox 360. Neither of which would break my heart if the resolution wasn't any better than what I have now.

Well, the wife overruled me on the larger set. Looks like it'll be the 42" LCD for me.

i have a 42" Panasonic 1080P G1 Plasma, 56" Toshiba (?model?) DLP, and a 37" Samsung 1080p LCD.

I recently moved the 42" to the main "entertainment" living room, moving the 56" DLP to the "greeting" living room, and i use the 37" as a monitor about 4 ft. away from the 42" Panny (hooked to same computer)

I should really post some pics, people say my "entertainment room" is over kill (although none of them would ever post in a place like this) - its nothing compared to some people on here, but about ~8k invested in electronics in this room alone.... my electric bill was $657 last most.

Sorry im rambling, had a few Maudite (beer) back to the point OP, the 42" should be plenty, we sit about 9 ft. away, and switching from the 56" DLP to the 42" Plasma for main viewing really wasn't bad at all, especially for the bonus in picture quality.

Will the 50" just not fit where you want to put it? Just wondering what is her reasoning for not allowing a 50". You can get a nice 40" LCD for about the same price as a nice 50" 720p Plasma.

50" won't fit. The 42 is a snug fit so it was really the max.

We ended up with a Target Clearance 42" LCD 1080p though, not a bad deal and a pretty nice set so far.
