I'm possibly thinking about buying the 42" Plasma at Walmart at the BF deal. How much of a difference is the HDTV vs. EDTV...I've read up on it but haven't seen any sample pics of either. Any input is appreciated.

I wouldn't buy it. EDTV is only 480p (852x480, and HDTV starts at 1280x720), so everything is heavily downscaled. You'd get the full resolution of a progressive scan DVD, but everything else--HD stations, Xbox360/PS3, future Blu-Ray or HD-DVD's--would not display at full resolution. It's also plasma, which allows for a great size for less money, but it has its problems: though often overblown, plasmas DO have a danger of burn-in, and plasma TV's fade in brightness over time. Save your money and buy a true HDTV--there are some decent BF deals tomorrow, and the HDTV buying season runs through the Super Bowl.

PLEASE PLEASE ignore the poster with the plasma losing brightness over time. YOUR TV (CRT and your LCD backlight is ratd 50khrs or so) WILL LOSE IT'S BRIGHTNESS over time! BUT because it is a gradual change you will more then likely NOT NOTICE it until you compare with a new tv...

EDTV is good but a higher res will give you more detail.

My dad got an EDTV plasma and it gives a great image. Roll on the 1080p ones whenever they come about :p

Yes

And to the OP, stay away from the EDTV. Just not worth it to get 480p and nothing more.
