Edmunds: BMW M3 vs. Pontiac G8

but the m3 is pure sex to drive, is the g8?

guess the "american" standard still stands: it can try to keep up in the straight line stuff, but can't handle

What do you really expect when one car costs $20k less? Also, when is something above .85g of lateral acceleration terrible at handling?

Don't feed the troll.

compare an M3 to an M5 or 7 series and see which handles better.

the G8 is significantly larger than the M3 (and a bit heavier). those both detract significantly from handling right away.

for its price point and vehicle class, the G8 in any guise is an excellent car, IMO.

Looking at the specs, that GXP did damn fine for being 300lbs heavier, a longer wheel base and just all around a larger vehicle.
It's an odd comparison I would say. Maybe a 335i comparison next to a normal G8GT would have been better and the results would have favored the G8.
Besides, you can (or could if the G8 dies this year) do a lot more to it. Tons of aftermarket tunes ups, custom ECU, cams, cams and more cams.
LSP has several handling improvement accessories that can be thrown in.

For the money spent the GXP did pretty fuckin good. If the same money were to be thrown into the GXP, the perfomance between the 2 would easily shift the other direction.
Like the article said, for an extra $25k...

I'm not someone who usually bitches about the interior, but holy shit, the G8's interior really is awful.

LS3, add a big supercharger on that, couple of sway bars maybe, and you'd be good for a rematch against the M3.

The interior does need work...

Piss on a supercharger, you wouldn't "need it" (not saying a S/C is bad...it would run like a raped ape with one! 😀) All you need is a ECU tune and you get already get up to 400bhp and the sloppy transimission shifts (for the autos) all but disappear.
Hell with the normal GT and a tune from PCMforless guys are getting sub 5s 0-60 times. Get the GXP a good flash and it's even quicker.

The G8 weighs 340lbs more than the M3, largely because it is 5 inches longer and 2 inches wider than a BMW M5. Of course it is going to get trashed in the slalom vs an M3. Not really sure why edmunds chose to compare these 2 cars, when a far more valid comparison would be between the GXP and BMW 550i, which is in the same price range as the M3 but closer in size to the G8.

An automatic with an LS3? Perish the thought. 🙂

Yeah, six speed manual is where its at.

I'd like a seven speed manual, technically, 10 gears would really let the car max out its engine potential, maybe even 20 gears, but that is hardly practical.

You strike again. The M3 better handle better and be faster for how much more expensive it is. It's not that far behind.

Or heck, compare the M3 to the equivalently priced (but much larger and more comfortable) Cadillac CTS-V. The CTS-V is not only faster in the straight line, but it's just as fast if not faster on many tracks as well.

It's a lot faster on the twisties. The CTS-V killed it at the Nürburgring. It's the fastest sedan to run at the ring............ever

42k for a rebadged Pontiac? Pass. Maybe be the best Pontiac ever but HP doesn't sell cars these days.
