Cliffs:
What Works:
Feels lightweight and nimble through corners; composed highway ride; 3.8-liter V6's strong torque and bass-tone exhaust note; supportive front seats; unusually good sight lines for a sport coupe.

What Needs Work:
Drivetrain's torque-reduction mode activates on hard upshifts; overboosted steering; no telescoping steering wheel; so-so interior materials; poor access to backseat.

Bottom Line:
Not as hard-edged as some competitors, but Hyundai's sport coupe is easy to drive quickly on a back road, yet compliant enough for everyday use.

Something is wrong with the model they have, numbers just don't make sense.

0-60 in 6.4 seconds? 1/4 in 14.5 at 97? That's PATHETIC for the HP/Weight ratio, they do mention some safety feature that might be causing the problem, but if they go to market with those numbers, they won't sell too many cars.

It's because of this:
t's impossible to say exactly why the Genesis coupe isn't putting up better numbers. But we do know that there's a torque-reduction feature on this car that would suck some of the fun out of Conrod Straight. Accelerate hard in 1st gear and then do a hard upshift to 2nd at or just before the marked 6,500-rpm redline. You'll get your upshift, but as the revs drop back, you'll feel an additional, artificial cut in power. It lasts for about 3 seconds.

Hyundai says this is a drivetrain protection measure

TERRIBLE. That is obscenely lame, who came up with this idea? Do any other cars have it? If I owned this car I'd very infrequently rag it out but when I do I'd want to know it's up for it. I think that is shameful.

Also, this car looks from the front a great deal like a tiburon to me. Not a fan, but that protection measure is absolute BS.

This is not going to help sales if people are aware of it. I could not stomach it.

Wow.. I now understand why Hyundai's tranny is called "Glass Mission" in Korea due to easy-to-be-broken and short life.

I wonder A/T version has such delay, as it has ZF tranny (which easily handles 300+ HP/lb-ft).

No, I care about a stock low boost 2.0 turbo with the same basic engine from the Evo X with infinite mod potential at $3,000 less than the regular 2.0T. I intend to mod it to hell. Bigger turbos, upgrade the internals, down pipe and exhaust will still not even put me close to the base 3.8's price level.

GM uses a same technique called torque management. It cuts timing amongst other things if you floor it off the line or full throttle downshifts.

The good news is the tuners will figure this out and fix it. I had my 04 Z71 with the 5.3V8 tuned to remove 80% of this feature. It made a night and day difference.

The problem I see is Hyundai must not be that confident in their transmission, rear end, etc to limit power this much.

Why do you suppose GM does it then?

The motortrend first drive said the 2010 Mustang is much better in the corners, as well as being faster.

It's more expensive, but I don't really dig the styling of the Hyundai. I'd go 2010 Mustang GT if I wanted cheap performance.

I think the Hyundai is a good car, and I like the direction Hyundai is going in, but it seems that it'll take a model revision before they get there.

LOL... same reason.

I think both mfg's want to reduce warranty claims.

0-60 MPH - 5.5 Seconds
1/4 Mile - 14.0 at 101.0 MPH
60-0 - 111 Feet

http://www.caranddriver.com/re...is_coupe_3_8_road_test

0-60 MPH - 5.7 Seconds

http://www.automobilemag.com/r...nesis_coupe/index.html

0-60 MPH - 5.9 Seconds
2.0T 0-60 MPH - 7.0 Seconds

Car Magazine Middle East: 0-62 MPH (100 KPH) - 5.9 Seconds

Not saying 0-60 times are important, since the entire package is very important. People have been reporting that it handles quite nicely, yet still has practicalities of a daily driver.

EDIT:
hehe, hyundai has a website where you can create your own commercial using an assortment of music, effects, and clips..
There was a thread on OT on it too.
mine!

I want to like this car...but for some reason the styling just isn't doing it for me. That being said...it's amazing how far Hyundai has come. The Genesis and now the Genesis Coupe are seriously competitive cars...and when you factor in the pricing...they come out amazing.

So they report big numbers, you buy it, and then ultimately cannot even use the power because the transmission can't take it.
