Editorial: IBM 120GXP Revisited

Interesting read. Two things to take from this article: 1) IBM won't admit to the problems and won't answer any questions regarding them or their latest 333 hour per month limitation, 2) IBM GXP drives fail sooner than the competition.

The bottom line: avoid IBM GXP drives at all costs. And if you bought one already, load up on chickens. Sacrafice one chicken every month in the hope your drive will last until your next upgrade.

They used to say "no one ever got fired for buying Big Blue".
IBM must be so scared of class action lawsuits on those drives that they are prepared to ditch the IDE market. Because that's what their doing. Put it this way, how can you place any confidence in this drive or IBM after what they're saying. The same problem is following 3 series of drives around. Thank God we've got so much great choice of hard drives around.

<< I'd really like to hear IBM's official comment regarding this. >>

Thats a big part of the problem... they are refusing to comment on it.

you couldnt pay me to buy an ibm drive. ok, you could, but i'd just buy a seagate or maxtor with the money, then i'd sell the ibm and buy another seagate or maxtor! 😀

"Thats a big part of the problem... they are refusing to comment on it."

Of course they aren't, there's a pending lawsuit. No company would have any official comment with a lawsuit on their hands.

the noted below "fix" to prevent "excessive dwelling" of the heads (about 2.5MB) is absolute proof they
know there's a problem and what it is. This is designed, if you follow the question at the bottom, for ALL
75GXP drives.

doesn't excessive dwelling happen with a live screensaver?
more likely with XP????

I have had about a dozen 75GXP's go bad, one just 2 days ago - when booting into windows the head seeks
sounded like a vinyl record being scratched.
I have had 2 60GXP's go, one suddenly would only read in real dos mode. (Not the mobo controller)

I only buy barracuda IV's now - for at least 4 months, and only 40's - less platters, less heat.

But hey, serial ATA will come out, IBM will make its offering, and everyone will hope for the best and try them
again.

"fix"

The problem isn't limited to XP. My 75GXP died around a month after installing win2k, although I don't know if thats related to it or not.
