Editing digital video

Does anyone have any recommendations for free video editing software?

I normally use NeroVision but find it very clunky. I have tried using VirtualDubMod but find it too time consuming to just cut out parts of a video.

I basically have a ton of captured DV in raw .avi format that I want to whittle down to a handful of clips.

I'm not aware of any good free NLE software. I use Sony Vegas Pro 8 and you can download the Movie Studio trial software, which sells for $80, and use it "free" for 30 days. You could probably get all of your editing accomplished much faster than that.
