edited after playing it for 1 week. i'm keeping this as "first impressions" because thats probably what most people will feel when they start. i'll add the new stuff below, read post #8.
open beta here: http://survarium.com/en
i recently "won" a key to play the survarium beta; this in its own is a weird lottery-like contraption that issues a key every 2 minutes to the people who register on the website, but at that rate i don't see why they couldn't just allow everyone to play.
Anyway, i played about a dozen games, did decently since my experience with FPSs, but ultimately i am disappointed.
some stock photos from google because they are accurate and i didnt bother recording/shadowplay my games.
so..
notice the crosshair? yup, your guns have more spread than a box of i can't believe its not butter that has been left out in the sun.
jumping takes nearly a second to be executed. everyone's player models are the same and this means a dark-flesh-color head and brown shirt, with the model's definition fading very quickly at any distance.
the world is also mostly made of bushes, trees and grass.
recoil is quite harsh and since there are no hitmarkers you'd be severely pressed to find what the pattern is.
guns have depletable ammo that you can perma-run out of. i found myself after dying twice in a new game without ANY ammo, with respawning not giving me any back. You also start with 3 clips only and a sidearm which uses the same ammo as the main, so it's really easy to run out.
sprinting is slow, there is no jumping through windows or other of the many obstacles littering the map. the devs seem to have zero experience whatsoever with FPS gameplay, which is what this game is - you spawn in CTF-like game, with objects littered around the map you need to capture and bring back. the team with the most objects wins.
there is experience and levelling, so you can get better guns and more ammo, armor, and gadgets, all of which you can pay for with real cash. there is a clear taste of P2W in Survarium, and while i'm sure that you can grind a nolife account, with consumables being a thing the wallet warriors will always have an edge.
But the worst thing is that the game feels clunky like a MP shooter from 15 years ago. Also, for some reason, the devs decided to put various traps around the map, such as radiation areas that kill you outright, or swamps that will colour your vision green until you die.
Add to this that the maps are more suited to a single player experience, with uneven spawns, visual cluttering, one-way only areas, and finally - although its hard to say, with the huge weapon spread and recoil - some hitbox issues. TTK is also ultralow.
I cannot recommend this to anyone. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of person would think this can ever be a sellable product, and yet they re working on it.
The design would make a great SP game. The maps look really, really good, overgrowth, bleak and diseased, but a MP on it is just stupid.
