So?

People who believe that all you need is an attitude adjustment always feel the need to share that philosophy. So people end up getting a trite little proverb instead of any real help, and I don't really mean financial help.

What kind of help? Psychological? Physical? The vast majority of ailments and problems in life are related to attitude and the will to overcome adversity.

People who have fallen on hard times, or who even are wildly successful but still unhappy, do not want an advice McNugget about how anything is possible when you try. Compassion, emapthy, maybe just shut up and listen for a change. Not, "you can do anything if you TRY!". It sounds like something you'd hear in a Nintendo game from 1986.

Yeah Dolph: all of the wimpy guys who cry about their gfs dumping them should be penalised for taking the public space. Gooooood! I'm not serious!

I think it's a bad idea to penalise them. It isn't always and only lazy people that end up on the streets. There are hardworking people who lose their jobs and can't get help from close people or it takes a while. . . . Those people don't stay on the streets for too long, but when they leave, there's always someone else in the same situation.

If you mean making it illegal in that the state must help so they have shelter at least, then good luck trying to persuade the tax payers.

reagan is responsible for many mentally ill wandering the streets as homeless when he cut way back on mental institutions.

Things can change if you want them too I dont care how bad you think it is, it can only get better if you TRY!

There is no word to describe the intensity of my loathing for people who spew this type of crap. Buckling down, working hard, and facing an unbearable life with a smile might work in a Disney movie, but the real world is considerably more cruel and unforgiving.
Ditto. If you were the manager at that mc donalds and a bum walked in with flies following him, would you give him a job? There is much more to the homeless problem than thinking that they are just "lazy", get a grip.

There are a vast, vast amount of resources available for homeless and drug addicted people, that are there specifically to give them a place to stay, get cleaned up and to assist in getting a job. The issue for most of the chronically homeless is that it requires giving up drugs and alcohol.

I give $20 everytime I see a homeless or firefighter or bother of islam asking. It does'nt bother me and they seem greatful.

Oh, the irony. 😀

Kid, when you wanna foot the bill for all the programs you want to implement, I say all the power to you.

But in the end they won't help.

BTW, how does one inform homeless people about the "vast" amount of resources? Through televison?

The problem is bigger than just a lack of trying.

There are people who dedicate their lives to helping the homeless, and those who help for lesser durations (like on mission trips). These resources, while not always readily advertised, are readily available and advertised by word of mouth.

You can't tell me you've never heard of the Union Gospel Mission, or the Salvation Army, countless missions, Youth Care, etc?

I still don't understand. Are you suggesting that the people who live on the streets be arrested? Forcibly removed and taken away?

Perhaps it'd be more clear if you would rephrase into a statement instead of a question. What changes/laws would you enact?

We have a fairly large population of people who live on the streets here in Grand Rapids. It seems like each winter we have a death or two from the stubborn ones who refuse to take advantage of the shelters and other programs that would help them and freeze to death while living under the many interstate overpasses. The police always say that there's nothing they could've done. If somebody refuses to join society and instead chooses to live as a vagrant, that's their right.

I still think the poster has a problem differentiating between homeless and panhandling.
