EDITED: Can I still setup a webite?

Okay, I have setup a server, and diving in headfirst.

I went to www.mydomain.com and signed up for a free domain redirect. I haven't purchased anything, yet it seems like it will still work...they say that their servers recheck addresses at hour-intervals(7:24am eastern for me) so that might just beit...

Anyways, I have Win2k Adv Server on a box and am hoping I can get some help.

I am running Analogx's Simple www Server and was hoping that was it.

Is ther a need for me to setup a dns server at all?(I don't see why if the site is doing it)

I have arouter as well(smC barricade) and was wondering what ports I should use, and who to piont incoming requests to the server. I heard maybe port 53

Just so you know. I have two pcs in my dorm, with the server running remotely via terminal server(It is sitting on top of my dresser with only cat 5 an power wires)

I have always seen people enjoyning hosting their own sites. I would love to do the same to actually learn how to do it. THe website will be very low bandwidth(might have to bride people to do it, but it will be interesting nonetheless)

Thanks

EDIT:

I appearantly set everything up so it should work, but appearantly my school's firewall is blocking any incoming transmissions that don't have am equvalent ougoing request. I already have a mydomain.com redirect to my ip, but no luck..:f.rown;

Is there any way to keep the connection open. I just want the website open for an expermiment. It is not going to be intensive at all if not a baren wasteland on the net. I just want to learn how to do it. Icould do it a home but the Remote admin would be a pian to setup.

If the hosting company handles the DNS, then you do not need to run DNS on your own server. Try pinging your domain name to verify that it resolves to your public IP address. By "router" do you mean the equivalent of a Linksys NAT box? If so, use its "virtual server" function to open port 80 to the internal IP address of the host running the web server.

Have fun!

Assuming the router is a typical NAT box, if you open port 80 to the internal IP of the webserver, just have the webserver listen for incoming connections on port 80 as well. Should work fine 🙂

It should, but it isn't:frown:

Here is my Website

As you can see, it doesn't seem to be working....

I have my static ip as the redirect and my NAT router is accepting port 80 and sending it to the server....are you are it doesn't have to be port 53..I know port 80 is http, but someone had mentioned...

I got fed up thinking that I did something wrong, so I erased it..

here is what I THINK is the problem...

upon creating another domain name, I t keeps asking me about my registra and to contact them to change my servers...blah blah blah...

I think that I misread this, and this a free domain name.

So if i get a free DOMAIN from dns2go.com for example, then can i use mydomain.com to stealth redirect it so it then appears that i have whatever.com?

I a mnew at this, and don't want to go buy a domain before i know my stuff.

thanks

ANyone have any ideas for this one?

Astaroth33 was really helpful; just wondering if there are any other peeps who could help me out...
