Seriously. I've been calling them for the past couple of months about some bullshit from 2018 that was a clerical error of the company my wife worked for back then, saying we owe like $10k when it's because her old company that sold the company reported her income wrong. Well now they are sending letters saying they are going to levy our property, etc if we don't pay it.

And I can't get through to ANYBODY.

I called them right at 7am when they open and after about 7 minutes of going through their horrible menus that take you down a rabbit hole, it tells me that due to the volume of calls they can't take mine now, call back later. This has happened every time I have called the past months.

Anyone have any clue how to actually get someone on the phone?

Even before covid, it would take an hour hold time but I was going through the employer side. Call your congressman's office. It's the field rep's job to help you. Granted, my wife was the field rep when I needed help with the 4th branch of government so ymmv.

Good luck.

Yeah thanks.

I found a more local IRS that opens shortly I'm going to call.

The problem is I can't hold for 1 hour or I would. When I get to the part I get transferred to an agent, it says "we are sorry blah blah blah please call back later" and it hangs up.

*sigh*

And I just called and they say the don't do phone help and to call 844-545-5640 to make an appointment and it takes me to the same god damn IRS line...

It's pretty much impossible to get IRS on the phone right now.

And I agree with @highland145 you're likely fucked. The old company will have to send corrected form but if the company was sold, it might be tough to get that corrected form you need sent out.

I always theorize that those types of call-center things where it gives you a "we can't take your call right now" is complete bullshit where it's basically a lottery system. Certain people are gone through - others are rejected in an effort to reduce the demand.

Keep calling back-to-back and memorize the quickest way to get to the rep and repeat 10+ times and see if you keep getting rejected.

during the middle of COVID I had to get unemployment on the phone to help my mother in law. Thats what I had to do to get a rep.

I am confused, did they report a W2 to you in 2018 and report a W2 with a different number to the IRS? In that case it should be easy to solve by showing them the correct W2 which you have. If they reported supplemental income like a 1099B or 1099-INT and they didn't send you a copy, you are likely going to have a very hard time proving it.

Calling them will be impossible so I think you are going to have to use written methods of communication for now.

Perhaps file a written appeal.

And the old company has to send a corrected form... I think you're fucked.

Pretty much -

Unlike our court system, for some reason fucking idiots think it's A-Okay to have an "guilty until proven innocent" system with the IRS. Their proof? Well, this employer here said you made $x. PROVE to me you didn't make $x!

Well... Uhhh, because people are human you complete idiotic twats?

the court system is jealous of their power.

on the other hand, if you are successful in ignoring them for long enough, and they forget to extend the lein on a property, it goes away. haha.

They did. Back in 2020. Because we got a letter from them as well for our "proof" of it as well.

It's fucked though because we literally entered our W2 information just fine as it was reported, but her dumb ass companies fucked it up and now we're screwed because of their f up.

I was looking for our old W2s and I found W2's from 2019 and 2017. The 2018 might be up there still but I just have to look harder.

I looked at the online stuff where I submitted it but it doesn't have itemized W2's for those years it just has our full return, which doesn't break it down by the W2's.

My wife had the correct W2's I believe, but the old company basically reported her salary for the full year as if she worked for them. Then the new company that she worked for for like 3 months, also reported that 3 months salary. So basically she had 3 extra months of salary according to both of the companies than what she had on her W2's.

Can't you just file and amended return for your taxes for that year and when mailing in the W-2s and that amended return, include the letters from her old company, even if the income amounts are the same. That would force them to take a closer look at your return. If not, an attorney would be able to take care of it too. Just tried to contact my Attorney General's office and my hand fell asleep trying to go through their menu system on the phone. Never got a real person and went to chat, which worked by the way.

Our return doesn't change. The W2's we received were the correct amounts of money she made. The error lies 100% on the old company giving the wrong information to the IRS.

I feel your pain. Guess they are hitting the year 2018, because that is the year they are after me on something.

you may need to talk to a lawyer about this.

I had similar fun calling the Canadian equivalent of the IRS, the CRA. I had no choice but to call due to some funky stuff happening to my account. I called at 9:00AM and had to wait in the queue for just over an hour before I got through.

I don't want to do that again.

I was going to suggest going to the local office. That's really the best way to solve things from what I've heard. I'm just not sure about the office availability with COVID restrictions still in place for some.

I've got to submit some forms to another federal agency and have been putting it off so I can walk them in....I need to do that ASAP too.

Can you just walk into the local offices? I am going to call tomorrow morning at 7am to try and make an appointment with them. Earlier it said the wait time would have been more than 60 minutes to be able to make an appointment and I don't have time for that shit right now.

You ever been to a social security office or place to get a driver's license?

1 Hour is entirely normal for government offices. With COVID I wouldn't be surprised to expect triple the time.

Pre-Covid I have done just that in the Norwalk & New Haven CT offices and despite reports to the contrary every visit has been low-effort/pain, plus actually solved problems.

You may need to make appointment and YMMV depending on the staff in your local office, but a face-to-face with an agent is a good idea.

I thought when you called the IRS national number at 1 800 829-1040 after the prompts and if they were busy - They would ask you to leave a call back number. It made it easier to get a representative to talk too. I think I used that method a time or two.

A few years back, that shit company Paychex got hacked with a huge data breach. People have been filing our taxes early ever since. We ended up contacting the FBI and a bunch of stuff over it, but ultimately just filed a paper return and they figured out the other returns were fraudulent.

I'm not sure if you can just walk into any govt office anymore. Sadly, that's the best way to get service when you can talk to a person that can't hang up on you or transfer you to someone new. (where you have to start over with the explanation) In most cases, they've seen just about every scenario and what you're describing can't be new. Good luck and post back how this turns out. We're all pulling for you.

If it's a lot of money you can likely get what they say you owe knocked down by 50% simply by filing for divorce.

So I got a callback to discuss my issue and if I could resolve it on the phone or can make an appointment in person, and she said it can be done on the phone and transferred me and now it's a 30-60 minute hold...
