Edit thumbnails

This is using paint.net so this could be a program specific question

I've noticed with some photos that I cropped and saved that the thumbnail in windows still shows the full uncropped picture, but if I open the pic it is definitely cropped. Obviously the thumbnail must be stored as a separate picture. How does one edit the thumbnail?

They are stored separately in most systems. I don't think you can edit thumbnails directly - in most cases they will adjust automatically after a program is closed and then reopened provided the original altered photo is properly saved..

You can try a few things. One shut Windows / File Explorer and reopen it. Then check the folder where the images are. Problem fixed ? ? Done. If not, then in the same folder where you put the pictures, there will be a file called Thumbs.db ... Delete it. Close and reopen file explorer. Problem fixed ? ? Done ... that should do it.

ok this would make sense... except that the picture in question was transferred via FTP to my computer. it never existed ON MY COMPUTER in its uncropped form. that means the uncropped thumbnail somehow was transferred with the cropped image :-(

see if the file is marked read-only. If so, change that property and then hit F5 to refresh the explorer view.
