Edit: Stuck in infinite loop w/ 2 NVidia cards

Argh. Im frustrated and baffled.

I have a AGP BFG 6600GT OC.
I also have an apollo PCI FX 5200.

These cards will not work together to let me extend my desktop over multiple monitors. I can boot with one card in at a time and have everything work fine, but when I try to extend the desktop from one monitor to another, my system locks up.

If the PCI card is selected in the bios as the first INIT, and the AGP card is present, the system will lock up and BSOD on boot.

If the AGP card is selected during boot, and the PCI card is present, the AGP card will get initialized, but not the PCI card. Once I get into windows, and try to extend my desktop, windows crashes.

It doesn't matter if I hook the monitors up via analog or digital.

If I give the system more than 64mb of memory in the bios for video ram, i cant select dual monitors. ive had both monitors run fine off of the 6600gt, but im trying to goto a third monitor setup at the moment. so far for testing I have only been testing out one monitor on each card.

Ive tried 4 different driver versions and messed with almost all of the settings in the bios... write speed, transfer speed, shadowing video ram etc.

Does it sound like my mobo is bad? the video card? im baffled. :bang: :bang: :bang:

Make sure the bios is set to check AGP first (not sure exactly where this option is located in your board, though).

see thats what I thought too... and i cant find any options for it at all in the bios...

what about the VGA palette snoop?

Nope, that has nothing to do with what's going on.

Let me see if I can find that board around here somewhere and find out where it is.

I found the option in the bios to only boot from the AGP card. Now I have a new problem. When I try to extend my desktop onto the fx5200 card from my 6600gt card, the whole system locks up and will not work.

i just installed the latest Nvidia drivers and that didnt fix the problem. I seem to be caught in an infinite loop....

suggestions?

I just found a supposed fix on NVidias forums... trying it out now!

i didnt work... it even got rid of my dual monitors!

Well i even ghosted back to my original system and I still cant get the damned cards to show up together...

i have a fx5200 pci card and a 6600gt agp card... both are showing up in windows hardware devices, but when I try to extend my desktop, i dont have that option at all... it only shows the one monitor and doesnt even give me the opportunity to extend the desktop anymore... .im baffled

edit: when i give the video more than 64MB of ram in the bios, i lose the ability to span desktops.... wierd as hell...

wonder if my mobo is bad? i just got it after 2 weeks I dont wanna have to send it back

When you installed the drivers, did it recognize both cards? I mean, did it list them both in the screen that pops up telling you what type of cards you have in your system?

yep! I even get the grayed out monitor in the system when i right click on the desktop....

when i try to extend to it, windows crashes!

Wonder how well an ATI card would play with an NVidia card...

Hey Gob, I had Problems with a ti 4200 I tried everything and the only thing that fixed it was a new Power Supply a REALLY good power supply less than fifty bucks and your wasting your time.

I have setup dual monitor systems at work but I was using older video cards. I did run into problems with two different nvidia cards trying to use the same drivers and not working. Don't remember the symptoms. I did get an AGP nVidia and PCI ATI card working together and onboard Intel and PCI SIS cards working together.

thanks for the info. I have a powersupply that was over $100. Its a top of the line Antec.

Woohoo! That worked! I bought a cheap ATI PCI card... radeon 7000, installed it and it works immediately! Thanks for the suggestion. The Nvidia drivers must have been screwing up the FX 5200

but the intention was only to have a third monitor off to the side to display text and such... no gaming planned on it
