i just got a new saphire radeon 9500 np from googlegear.com . i went through the registry and got rid of all my nvidia crap and tried to run 3dmark. it crashed in the 4th test. i do the softmod to make it a 9700 and it crashes AND gets artifacts. so i thought, screw it i will just reinstall windows. reinstalled windows, ran 3dmark and it still crashes. any ideas??

the 3.0s see my card as a 9700 and will cash horrific artifacts in 3dmark and probably still crash it (as it did b4 i reinstalled the os)

*update* installed the cat 3.0s. installed dx9. 3dmark still crashes. i really don't want to RMA this card.

*edit* don't think this matters, but the BIOS of my card is BK-ATI VER008.004.008.003. is that what it is supposed to be???

does it crash when you don't even install the softmod?

if so, maybe your card is hard modded by someone and returned?

correct. when i reinstalled windows and everything i still get the same problems. i sent an RMA form to googlegear for the time being. they won't respond until tuesday so i can still try other things to fix this.

Do you have a spare PSU you could try? And do you have the latest bios for your motherboard? Also try turning off fastwrites, and setting you AGP to 64mb, or 128mb if is not already.

i get the same kinda of problem with my ATI 9700 pro in 3D mark. "Nature" test in 3d mark is the only thing that will crash my card so far...i have no idea why. i have run with every driver available and tried just about everything i can think of. i think it is a compatibility issue...or something.

Try running with-out your case cover on. Sounds like an overheat issue to me. It could be CPU, RAM or the 9700.

might just be me noticing, but maybe you should try running everything at default settings, like your cpu for example?
try changing your cpu back down to 'normal' 1400mhz and setting your ram timings at 2.5 just for testing.
good luck :)

A couple of things going on here. First, a lot of systems seem to crash on Nature and the High Polygon tests in 3dmark2001. Uncheck these and see if the test completes. I could never get these tests to complete when the OS was Me. But when I installed Win2KPro, they would run. If you can get 3DMark2003 to complete without running Nature and the High Polygon tests, and you can run Prime95 successfully (see below), then I wouldn't worry about the crashes.

The artifacts may mean that you were one of the unfortunate to get a 9500 which will not successfully patch with Soft9700. OTOH, it might mean be the combined result of your patching and your overclocking, and that you'll need to back down on your overclocking.

What kind of stability testing did you do when settling on your overclock? Can you run the Prime95 torture test at your overclock without the test failing? Others have recommended that you try default settings (e.g. no overclocking). If you haven't run Prime95, or some other good "burnin" program, I'd try that, to see if the problem is the overclocking.

when i reinstalled windows, i DID NOT overclock the card. i installed it normally.

3Dmark crashes during different tests. Sometimes during the high poly car chase, sometimes during the low poly dragolith one.

I will put my processor back to normal settings and see if that helps anything and report back in a little while.

thanks everyone who tried to help!
