Just a quick question, but when you write an essay, what are the "rules" for deciding between writing a number out (thirty) and actually putting the number (30)?

In context:
"...had to complete (30/thirty) hours of community service..."

Either is acceptable, but "thirty" is probably preferred when using low numbers or if you aren't using too many numbers in your essay.

My English teachers have always said spell it
though I've never been marked off for it on any papers...

I was always taught if its ten or under spell it out, > ten then you can use the digits...but meh
