edit OS boot menu

repairing a friends laptop where xp wouldn't boot up. Put CD in expecting to use the repair option. While i didn't get that menu, xp started a new install.
I canceled it.
The old XP install now boots successfully somehow, but I'm left with the canceled install in the boot menu.
Two Windows XP, one is the canceled install, the other works.

How do i remove the one that's no longer needed, and how to recognize which is which, they look the same. just wanna remove it so that windows starts the old install that now works again,

thanks

thanks for links,

i made the boot that works the default, and it works.

Didn't want to end up removing the wrong one, they both look identical.

I believe what fixed it is removing Norton from start up, i never did get to the repair menu as planned. That created a second XP in the menu at startup.

free laptop repairs for friends, gotta love'em.

Once you know which one is working, you can check the wording and then follow the steps to delete the non working one. You can be sure, if you don't the owner of the computer, will at some point be poking around and will mess up your setting. Next thing will be call to you saying "it won't boot up" again.

ah it's never easy !

When i got this laptop, windows would not load. It just started the bootup, and shut itself down.
In safe mode, it claimed there is none zero for a restore point.
Remove stuff 1 at a time from startup, stuff not needed, IMO. The last thing I removed was Norton, all of it. Then windows boots, all looks and seems good. Thought this puppy was all good.

So, I'll put my choice of AV software, Aviri. Installs, but it won't update. uhmm

So of to the free online checks, firefox works fine. But most sites require IE to do it's system scan, well IE can't connect to anything. Windows firewall is off, yet IE can't even load google, while firefox does.

I found a site that scans via Firefox, pandasecurity.com
12% and 40 infections, guessing this install is hosed.
Well, hope it doesn't ask to purchase when it's done, and just clean it.

New install I guess.
