I've had 4 high speed internet connections prior to this one and it is certainly the slowest I've ever had. When i got it at the beginning of August it was pretty good but the last couple of weeks the speed has plummeted. I thought perhaps I was having a hardware issue or something but my download speed is capped at 30k/sec. I'm paying $50/month for that garbage. 30k/sec, yes you read it right. So before I call them are any other BS DSL Users here having the same problem?

It seemed almost to coincide with me moving my computer around the room. Instead of the stock wire they were giving I now have a longer one I bought from home depot that runs from the standard phone socket to the DSL modem. I thought perhaps that could be slowing it down, but then the building has probably had the same phone wire for years and I can't really see how a new 15" one, even if low quality, could affect my speed in this manner.

That can't be right. That' CAN'T be. 30kbps? You do understand that a 56k dialup modem can connect as fast as 53kbps, right? And you're paying for DSL speeds?

yes but with dial-up..DL speed would be around 4-5kbps..

Thats to slow you should be getting at least 100 KB/sec if not 150 KB/sec (KB= Kilo Bytes per sec)

30kbps is still HORRID and shouldn't even be considered broadband. :disgust:

I have it, and for 2 years it's been great. But in the past 4 months they have been really screwing up our phone bill and charging us 400 dollars for a phone bill that should be 150. Every month we call and get it fixed and they see what the problem is, which it is with their fastaccess billing, and correct our bill. But they are beginning to really suck. Tech support sucked really bad when we moved to our new house and had problems with getting it set up. (their fault by the way).

Any ways, we are about to change to something else. YOU SHOULD TOO!

I certainly don't suck...it's not fault you've never been on the other side of the phone when I picked up.

Sorry your DSL sucks. It's bellsouth, what can I do? Free modems all around. !!!

Hmm.. I don't have it but I've set it up recently for a few clients and the speed was generally about 100-130k/s on misc downloads that I did to update their systems afterwards. So, 130*8=~1Mbit connection which is what they advertised in the past.

Uploads were ~30K/s which is right about 256Kbit connection again what they advertised. If you arent' happy check DSLReports and see who else offers broadband. While you are there you can download the tweak tools and make sure your system is configured properly.

I wish I could get DSL (or cable modem again) myself but I apparently live in the bermuda triangle of broadband. You can find it all around me, but, not in my pocket of town.

OK I guess it may just be me and not necessarily Bellsouth. I'll see if perhaps my computer is being stupid about it or talk to their tech support. Is it at all possible that my new phone extension is the cause?

Yes that is a possibility. Have you talked to Fastaccess tech support yet? My DSL connection in Atlanta was flawless and this past week I was thinking of switching from Charter Cable back to Bellsouth DSL.

I have Bellsouth DSL and I just checked mine at 1.1 megabits down.

I have had problems with their support desk before but if you insist on a tech, they will let you talk to one.

No, modem speed is up to 53kbps, or 6.625kBps. Nobody ever can get this terminology straight (thus the confusion in this thread)....If he's really getting 30kbps, then he's getting the shaft. If 30kBps, he's still getting the shaft but depending on his contract...

According to the "delta method" of network troubleshooting, if all your problems can be traced to the moment you made that particular change, then that is definitely something you should look at. Get a shorter extension and move your pc; if the problem goes away...

You should also check to see if you're getting packet loss on the line. Run a continuous ping to a few destinations and see if any packets are getting dropped. A couple of months ago my connection went nuts, and with the help of some very helpful Speakeasy DSL tech support people, we traced it to a Pacific Bell voltage issue, and were able to fix it in a couple of days.

At least try a download test here!! Let us know the numbers.
dslreports.com:)
bandwidth place is giving 237 kilobits/sec. FVCKIT!!

Is you package for dsl 768/128 ??? if so when I had DSL I was only getting 400/130. They told me they promise 1/2 the maximum speed.

If you have a 600down package you arent too far off. My cable is 5 times faster than my DSL was and I live 1 mile form the c/o for my dsl.

Good luck

Did BellSouth install the extension, someone else, or did you put some Skoorb-Fu on it? :)

In my experience, once one of our clients has DSL installed, we have to watch tel line installs like a hawk, since invariably the tel installers will fark it up, and won't check the DSL performance at all after they are "done."

At the very least, does the new extension have a filter installed--either embedded in the jack, or externally on the line? All extensions in your place should have a filter installed.

Just pinged yahoo 50 times. I have 0% packet loss with an average ping time of 90 ms. That's pretty good and the lack of packet loss, plus the fact that I'm always appearing to be capped at 30k/sec indicates to me that this is BS's fault, so I'll have to call them.

Well further to your comment, tallgeese, on the line filter I went and checked and I do indeed have a line filter. The damn thing was plugged into the phone output. I'd like to believe it was somebody else but I can't. For some unknown reason I just totally phased out when hooking it up. I just put the phone line into the DSL out and the download has jumped from a solid 30k/sec to 150k/sec
