I discovered that the two previous owners had used cable and dish for entertainment.

Duplicate cable wiring to every room. 🙁
Splitter box is in a crawl way for the dish system.

You would think that the cable people would have just disconnected the cable line from the dish and hooked into the house feed..

No, they had to run their own lines all around the house.

Some weekend, I am going to see if there is a way to tap back into the dish system and remove the outside cable lines.

That sounds worse than the cable was in my house. The previous owner had satellite TV and a cable modem. Somehow he had wired both into the same wiring. I'm not sure how it was working at all.
I still want to properly re-cable everything but it is a lower priority since it is all working now.

The third pic has MONSTER potential for a home theater. Congrats!

Yep!

The wall that the projector is going to be displaying to is behind where that picture was taken, directly across from the wall with the window that you can see in the picture.

That window is also the only window that really gets any sunlight into the room, so it's pretty dark down there too if the lights are out, even during the day.

I don't know why but I'm nervous about settlement lol. I know there is nothing to really worry about, and the closing costs are coming in nearly $2k less than the GFE, so that is good.

I think it's just the fact it's a major decision and is going to be a major change in my life.

Yeah its a huge debt in your life time. but at lease ur not throwing Rent money down a dark hole. I don't know what your interest expense is, but when I rented I was nervous about the fact that I could for the same price own a crappy house down the road and at lease sell out with equity when i moved.

Good Luck, and get your handy man hat on.

i thought the same. everyone told me growing up "houses never depreciate!"

what a load of bull that was.

10 years later, and $30K in remodeling plus ALLL of my free time, i had to move out of the city due to lack of work, the house wouldnt sell so i had to rent it out.

now my renter is getting city sanitary violations and paying me late, which means i cant pay my mortgage on that house which means my credit takes a hit.

that house/mortgage was the worst thing ive ever done. and if i dont short sell it soon, the roof is going to need replacing and the windows are long overdue.

all i want is to get rid of that money pit and just pay someone else to deal with all the crap that comes along with home ownership. renting can be a beautiful thing. at least with renting, you know there wont be hidden or emergency costs. and if i ever buy a house again, i will buy it with cash. no more big loans for me, ever.

I bought my first house almost exactly a year ago, and I had all the same fears you have. I will tell you, a year later, those fears go away. I love my house for all the usual reasons, in spite of the fact I absolutely hate yard work.

I am now leaving work and settlement is in one hour! Still feeling a little nervous but I know all will be well after. It's weird because I don't even know if we're going to go to the house right afterwards or not, since we aren't moving in until Saturday. I will have to go beforehand though to stock the fridge with beer for my buddies helping us move.

youll be fine. it didnt work out for me, but i was also single. with a family, youll have more stability and motivation to keep building your nest. good luck man, and stop being nervous cause its not going to do anything at this point! have fun!

welcome to house slavery.

I was done a year ago... wife decided she misses the mortgage debt and now I am mortgaged again...

Congrats in purchasing the house! The first thing you should do (was suggested to me by someone on these forums years ago) is change all the toilet seats!

Only for the germophobes. You can wipe them with some lysol and you'll be good to go, literally.

Call me a germaphobe then 😀 If some 600 pound behemoth has been splattering loads of liquid shit all over the underside and topside of the seats for years, I'd rather have a brand new one 😀

Did you perform a walk thru beforehand?

I would want to go to the house and change the locks and not wait til Saturday.

And as already mentioned, change the toilet seats. Also, you'll probably want to do some cleaning before moving all of your stuff in. Any painting you might want to do will be easier also without furniture and moving boxes.

Congrats. Bought my first house earlier this year and couldn't be happier with the decision. I have the same thing with cable lines, two of each running everywhere. Cable box on the house plus two satellites on the roof. If even have the slightest of inclination to change any of the carpet do it before you move in. Finding somewhere to move large pieces of furniture to can be a massive PITA.

congratulations.

i remember when i bought my home almost a decade ago. one of the worst decisions of my life

When I stopped to realize that every time you post here, you make a decision to click the "submit reply" button... You're not very good at making decisions, are you? 😛 🙂

Congratulations OP!

Congrats. I bought my house nearly a year ago and remember those feelings. After the first night you'll be happy. And after the first project you do cause you want to you'll like it even better. Wired my home with cat6 and it was nice just be able to do it and not have ask anyone for permission.

Well it's a done deal! It took only about an hour which was nice, and then the wife and I went to the house to go in on our own, and I brought some beer in for the guys who are helping me move on Saturday, so the fridge is stocked with about 3 dozen beers.

Here's some pics I snapped today.

The 3rd and 2nd to last pics, between the fuse panel and the window, is exactly where my projector screen is going to be 🙂
