I got sent a debit card on my 16th birthday without even asking, and I have an account that's on my name only (but I'm in the UK so it might be different).

To be honest, I think it's a good thing, I've spent waaay to much money on stuff (especially Amazon because they take my debit card) than I should have. (£400+ in a year and a bit, plus £40 on other places).
Be glad you can't waste loads of money on the internet.

Debit card + Internet = Stupidest thing you can do online that doesn't involve a Nigerian Prince.

Use a CC, or wait.

great advice! if you have a problem with any transaction (likely to happen on the internet at least a handful of times, especially with e-bay), it's a heck of a lot easier to either refuse payment and get the charges dropped on a credit card than a debit card.

I almost only ever use it on Amazon. Don't have much money in the account anyway (normally £50 tops), and it's usually for CD's/games.
Most expensive stuff is bought with CC and from other places anyway.

Go to another bank. I had a debit/check card at 15 and real credit cards at 16, (cosigned obviously)

how's the bank going to know?

have your parents open up the checking account for themselves, and then they just give you the debit card / pin #. only thing they ever look at ID for (at least at my bank) is when you're making a face-to-face withdrawl (I've gotten carded when making deposits too, but there's this one lady at my bank who hates me)... the ATM doesn't know who you are, as long as you have the right card and pin :)

ok so right now my parents already have an account at lasalle. They apply for debit card and give me the card so i can use it. They can put a limit on it right? because this debit card is really just a practice credit card for me.

because banks have time to scroll through individual charges? *blink* *blink*

as long as the charges aren't disputed and don't appear suspicious (ex: my parents once got their credit cards cancelled on them because their bank saw suspicious behavior -- the credit cards were being used in different parts of the country every day; just so happened we were in the middle of moving cross-country), the bank doesn't give a shiat.
