It's unfair that the team that loses late don't get to compete for the national championship. The teams that lose early still have a bigger chance. Remember the year 2000 when Miami beat FL state and FL state went to the championship game? If it was Miami in that game, the might have won.

It's actually easier now then it used to be. The polls tend to penalize a team more for losing late. Most of the computer rankings don't care when it was played (NYT places emphasis on recent games, so a late loss will hurt, but Billingsley puts more emphasis on earlier games). So, before the BCS where only the polls mattered, Miami would be penalized more then this year, where the polls and computers have equal emphasis.

So are you saying that Miami might still be in it if USC or less like OU loses?

Depends on how much the polls penalize them for the loss. I mean, they looked bad. Really bad. So, we'll see in a few days

I think D. Crudup starts next week--notice:

1.) Coker was asked about the quarterbacking- he didn't respond with the usual, "Berlin's our starter."

2.) Instead, he said we've made a mistake at quarterback position--hrmmm.

3.) This is the first time in recent UM history that a quarterback has been pulled like this.

I think that of the 1 loss teams, OSU (because of computers and SOS) and USC (because of polls) have the best chance. I also think that if Oklahoma loses, the only fall slightly. Miami would be in the next tier, with FL ST, VT, and LSU. Depending on how far Miami falls would determine where they fall in that second tier.

Yeah, but OSU's S-of-S is going down as the high ranked Big Ten teams play each other and take each other's rankings down. But their SOS will still be fairly good at the end of the year.

Well, USC looks good right now for Sugar Bowl with OU.

Miami is pretty good as well as VT, BUT all the big plays are going VT's way.

i can say that almost any other 1-loss team in the top 10 deserves to go to the sugar bowl more than USC does... USC hasn't played a good team yet and even lost to a terrible team...

I wouldn't have beleived you, but I would have at least accepted your argument, until this last week. WSU was ranked 6th in the polls (and is now only down to 12th in AP). Virginia Tech is the only 1 loss team that has been as impressive against as many teams as USC.
