Depending on the condition of the car/engine/transmission I'd say you overpaid by a few hundred.

I would have bargained them down to around $1900, here's what 89-90 Celica's are selling for locally:

90 CELICA, $1500. 190K miles, well maintained, dependable, some body damage.

90 CELICA. 177K, 5spd, 3/04 tags. Extra set winter tires. Good cond. $1,950.

1989 TOYOTA Celica ST, 4 cyl automatic, new tires, very clean, $2250.

90 Toyota Celica Loaded, Must Sell! Only $3900, Low down, low pymts. Trades, past BK OK On Aprvd Cred dlr

Does not sound like a very good price to me, but I guess it depends on your area. Around here you can get a Supra with similar mileage (albeit 1 or 2 years older) for that price.

1990? A/C needs a recharge? You're SCREWED! That's an R-12 system, nobody's going to want to even touch it. R-12, if you're lucky enough to find it, runs about $60-$70 per pound (typical car needs ~2 pounds) and if it's leaking you'll have to fix the leak first too. What they will likely make you do is convert to R-134a, which will probably reduce the cooling effectiveness of your A/C system and which will definitely decrease the life expectancy of the compressor. You'll probably need to put $500-$1,000 into the A/C system if you want to get it running again.

Of course, if the last guy had it converted to R-134a, then you're OK once you fix that leak.

I think you paid a little bit more than you should have, but not an excessive amount. The lack of rust is a huge benefit given your location.

There's your way out. Lucky for you!

$2200 is pricy for a 14 year old Celica!

too much, I'd say no more than 1400, and that's a lot for a common 14 yr old car.

I think you got a good deal...

everytime I find a used car in good condition and lowball (by giving an offer per the private party value on edmunds.com), it gets sold to someone willing to pay a little more...(i wanted that '96 240sx-se sooooooo badly :p)
