EDI transactions XML?

Starting a new business and the subject of EDI transactions came about. I have some knowledge in xml so my first reaction was to create a document for the solution. After investigating a bit I found there to be many different software options for handling EDI transactions.
Also, the need for a VAN. Is this totally necessary?
So, should I go an EDI software package route, or should I convince my boss that XML is our avenue of choice?
