Edge browser flash video problems

Can someone with Windows 10 test something with Edge for me? Can you go to IGN and Gamespot and see if any of their videos will play properly with the flash player.

Since a few weeks ago, I can't get any videos of those sites to play at all for some reason with Edge. With Chrome, they all work great.

I have the Adobe flash player enabled in the settings for Edge, but it makes no difference.. However, other flash videos on other websites play just fine.

Maybe it's because those websites use an older version or something?

I have Windows 10 on my laptop, which is running Distributed Computing in my basement. So I mainly use it over VNC. I loaded an IGN trailer on it, and it appeared as good as can be expected. But I can't say for sure it was perfect. What problems are you seeing?

P.S. They show ads before/in the middle of trailers?! o_O That's why I AdBlock in Firefox. :colbert:

My main problem is black screen with sound with IGN, and black screen and no sound on Gamespot. However, there are certain videos on IGN that will work, but on Gamespot I get nothing no matter what.

I spent two hours last night trying to troubleshoot this issue. I uninstalled, reinstalled all Windows updates including the flash related ones, I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, checked the settings for Edge browser about 10 times..

I even actually uninstalled Edge and then reinstalled it! Still nothing has changed D:

I'm pretty sure it's some kind of hardware acceleration problem, but Edge doesn't even have a HWA toggle switch where I can test it exactly.

This has really turned me off using Edge. I like it as a browser (especially the speed and how smooth it is), but Chrome is just much more polished, which should be expected I suppose since Google have had way more time to work on it.

Did you update your video card drivers? Nvidia?

Yeah, I'm using the latest drivers which are 361.75. I've also used the sfc /scannow and DISM commands and nothing ever turned up other than the opencl.dll being corrupt, but that's a well known bug with Windows 10 version 1511.

Even after system file check switches the NVidia opencl.dll for the Microsoft version (which has less functionality), I still can't play the video with Edge..

And the funny thing is, I can't even uninstall Flash completely since it's built directly into Edge

This problem has resisted me like no other. There is no way I'm going to reformat though, as I don't like Edge that much.

I'm thinking of posting on the Windows 10 forums to see if they can give me any other ideas because I've exhausted all of mine.

I just tried an IGN video on an i7 L 620 system. It is slow as dirt, took forever to be able to play without stuttering, and was unable to jump around to various points in the video. What a disaster...

I tried the same thing on firefox. It loaded normally, no stutter, and I'm able to skip to any point in the video instantly. This is actually kind of surprising because usually there is a loading/buffering delay in most players. But apparently not in whatever player IGN is using.

As you'd expect, microsoft created yet another fine product worthy of its $400billion market cap.

Maybe don't use Edge...?

I've already been using Chrome as my primary browser for a long time.

I just want to figure out what's causing the problem..

I like the speed of Edge, it's probably the fastest browser in certain work loads. But it's GUI is just... I can't stand it man. I'd rather use the slower Chrome or FF.

Google recently updated their compression algorithm for Chrome, so it's more on par with Edge now if you ask me whilst retaining more functionality.

Are you still seeing the problem today?

I am having no issue playing random videos on either site on my VM using the Edge browser.

If you are still having issues, can you watch the same videos on other browsers?

What?

I cannot reproduce the issue you describing in the OP although when playing it back certain elements did seem slightly laggy (at first) but the video was smooth.

Have you tried raising the Windows timer resolution? AFAIK IE11 (and probably edge) do not raise it above the default 15.625ms although I'm not sure if that's the case when watching Flash content as well. You could try raising it to 1ms or 0.5ms to see if it makes a difference[1]. I believe that the way IE11/Edge are coded it shouldn't make any difference but I'm just throwing out ideas here.

[1] http://www.lucashale.com/timer-resolution/ download the free one on the left and click maximum after starting it. It should increase the resolution to 0.5ms (the maximum). You have to keep it running for it to have an effect.

I finally managed to fix the problem. Although I could never manage to pinpoint the source of the issue, I rectified it by just doing an update repair. Basically, it just reinstall Windows 10, without removing any of my files or programs.

It's a nifty feature, and I don't know why I never thought of it before.

Glad to be running Edge as my primary browser again though. As barebones as it is, it's still very much superior to Chrome in terms of performance; especially in scrolling smoothness and launch speed...

Also, Chrome was giving me problems with shockwave crashing.
