Edgar Martinez Award

Bud Selig announced tonight that there will be a new annual baseball award -- the Edgar Martinez Award honoring the best designated hitter in baseball (meaning the AL, of course). Say what you will about the legitimacy of the DH, but I'm glad to see that Edgar will always be remembered by the game (unless they get rid of DHs, I guess). And hey, how can someone with a major award named after him not end up in the Hall of Fame? ;)

I was at the game last night when Ichiro broke the hits record, but didn't have tickets tonight (and I'm going tomorrow for Edgar's last game, heh), but man, if there was ever a three game series that I would've liked to go to every game. Other than the M's record, this has been/will be a great year to be a Seattle sports fan.

Edit: Here is the first link I've been able to find for it, although it focuses more on the postgame ceremony for Edgar than the award itself.

Edgar Martinez award? What's next, the Jessie Orosco award? Sounds ridiculous even if Edgar is a great DH...

I dunno, I would argue that he's defined the position.

Of course, I would also be in favor of a Babe Ruth award for the best slugger of the year (or a Ted Williams award to replace the batting title).

How about the Orlando Hernandez award for the oldest 34 year old to ever set foot on Earth?

I think Martinez should play third for his final major league game. At least for a few innings anyways.

This is MLB. It encompasses both the National and American leagues. This award does not.

At any rate, I think a pitcher should hit. He's a friggin player on the field after all. DH is BS. Edgar is a great hitter nonetheless.

It was a great ceremony last night. Edgar deserves everything he gets. He is not only a great player, but also a great all around person. You don't find many MLB players these days with the work ethic, integrity, loyalty, discipline, humility, and generosity of an Edgar Martinez. He is a truely great man.

Oh yea, got pics of Ichiro hitting his 260th too...

Wow this is lame. Edgar is cool and all, but who cares about the best DH? Oooh let's have an award for the guy who's best at hitting but can't play in the field!

Edit: and I like the DH position!

I think there should be a Ken Macha award to go to the dumbest manager of the year.

selig is the biggest lamer in baseball, and the DH position is bs.

this is like awarding a player for doing half the job...yay, way to go!

And in a related story the NFL is giving out an award for the best job running out on the field to pick up the tee following kickoffs. A designated hitter is a one-dimensional player who can't be trusted even in left field. Given the sorry state of defense in professional baseball exactly how pathetic does a guy have to be with a glove to not be allowed to play in the field? If you can't field a position well enough to be allowed in the starting lineup you should be installing cable TV in Des Moines, not getting an award.

Ack, my bad. It turns out that they're renaming the existing DH of the Year award after Edgar, not creating a new award.

And anyone who thinks Edgar doesn't belong in the HoF cares more about stats (or arguing about what baseball should be rather than recognizing what baseball is) than recognizing excellence on the field. :p

"Excellence on the field"??????????? Ummm, newsflash here, Edgar wasn't allowed on the field due to gross incompetence with a glove. He was a designated hitter, a player not good enough to get on the field, let alone display excellence once he was there. Women's softball allows for designated runners to compensate for non-athletes who can't even waddle their asses down the basepath. Should the best designated runner get an award?

I hate Bud Selig. This is just one more move he's made that's worsened the MLB. I agree with whoever said you should be dead before they name a reward after you.

why do you call the state of defense "sorry"? I guess I've gotten accustomed to great D all year watching all those Dodgers games ;)

edgar will not go to the HOF becasue he has racked up only 2200 hits in 18 years playing baseball...

putting that in perspective

Kirby puckett who is in the HOF had more hits in 12 seasons..
and ichiro has ~900 hits in 4 seasons.
