ECS K7S5A versions and compatibility with Athlon XPs

Hi guys, I have an ECS K7S5A with an Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz clocked at 1.5GHz on my HTPC setup. Its working flawlessly, but being 1.5 years old, its getting a little long in the tooth for certain applications, so I thought maybe I'd pop in a new CPU to give it a new lease of life. The ECS website states that there are 2 versions of the K7S5A(disregarding the Pro version which mine isn't) - V1.x and V3.x.
V3.x is supposed to support all Athlon XPs, and they have that feature listed in blue, which denotes that this is the differentiating feature between it and V1.x. However, the weird thing is that under the V1.x specs, they also list Athlon XP support, except its in black rather than blue.

I'm not sure what version mine is. Is there a way I can tell without opening up my case? Its quite a hassle since its in a rack. Also, what's the deal with the Athlon XP support. Do both versions support it or what? If so, what's the difference between them?

Originally the early versions had problems with XP cpus.

Later versions of ver1.x support XP cpus properly.

You must open your case to see. If by the cpu socket you see a sticker the says XP then it supports XP cpus.

The rev # is near the bottom by the last PCI slot in the far left corner (looking at it sideways)

I have rev3.1 and it works great.

Hmmn, I got mine sometime in October 2001, wonder it it'll support Athlon XPs. Guess I gotta open up the case then...

Goi,

Most of the non-stickered K7S5As will run an Athlon XP fine. My son's board is about the same age as yours and running an Athlon XP 1600 with no problems. You might need to update the Bios to support it. He also runs a Geforce 4 4400, two sticks of DDR 256 + 128 (mixed brands), Santa Cruz soundboard with a generic case and generic 300 W power supply. It is worth the try.

Thanks...it's just a thought, I think the 1.5GHz Thunderbird can hang in there for a couple more months at least...I just gave it a new lease of life by replacing the Radeon VE 32MB with a Radeon 8500 128MB 🙂
