ECS K7S5A PRO question - cheepoman or speedfan?

I just got a 1800+ DLT3C JIUHB and ECS K7S5A Pro deal from frys for low price and this sucker can go all the way to 2.4 ghz. I now have two of these, one in a NFII board and this one to go with the ecs board. I used a known wire pin mod on the back of my athlon chip to fool the motherboard into thinking the chip has a 13x multiplier, and hoping to get 13x166. I know that the cheepoman bios offers fsb support up to 166, but it has a known bug in which it doesn't boot this high. I heard that speedfan windows fsb software can be used to get to 166 and I would likely use speedfan, but does it work on the bios it ships with or do I need to install the cheepoman bios? What does the cheepoman bios offer for other speed tweaking options? THanks.

You'll just have to try the cheepoman at 166 and see if your system posts. The biggest problem with the ecs board is the lack of cpu vcore adjustments. You may also be able to do a mod for voltage on your xp1800. Check the default setting in the bios, and decide how much voltage increase your heatsink can handle.

Cheepoman's BIOS is magnificent, and offers great stability as well. I highly recomended and... if you wish to run your processor @ 166, you'll just have to deal with your memory running at 133.

There is no way to run the memory and cpu fsb in sync? I have the setup to get 166 on both, does cheepoman let me run them in sync at 166?

The manual does not say. If not, you can probably use the memory, just not in ECC mode, as I recall.

IIR there is a 166/166 setting, but as you mentioned 166 FSB does not work.

I never tried it, but I was told that you have to use the cheepo or some other tweakers BIOS, set to 133 in sync, then use a program that sets the clock generator chip to 166.

150/150 worked fine for me back when I was fooling with this sort of thing. Ran Memtest overnight. Ran prime95 overnight. I could also set the memory to 166 and run Memtest. 166 FSB no boot. CMOS time.

KF is right. 166/166 in BIOS will not post. You can use SpeedFan or any other fsb adjustment utility to bump the fsb from 133 to 166 while within windows (fsb and memory are synchronous). Since the fsb just has to be 133, you can use any BIOS: Cheepoman or official.

No, this board does not support ECC ram. I don't think it will work in non-ECC mode, but I don't have experience with this, so I could easily be wrong.

No this board will not post at 166.

My setup is stock bios and CPUFSB (http://www.podien.onlinehome.de/CPUFSB.HTM) that loads automatically with windows.

Cheepos, and Honey X are both good at what they do, but the memory timings are a little to tight, and create alot of instability at 166 (bios at 150 and CPUFSB at 166). The Stock Bios is 2.0 - 2 2 3 6 while the mod bios are 2.0 2 2 2 4 These timmings will run great at 133 to 150 but the chipset was not desinged to run 166, and thus causes instability.

Use can use the Wire mod (http://www.ocinside.de/go_e.html?/html/workshop/pinmod/amd_pinmod.html) to adjust multiplier and voltage, and use CPUFSB to adjust the FSB. I get my 2600+ (16 X 133) to run 2416mhz (14.5 X 166) and 2400 (16 X 150) at stock (1.65) voltage. I will try to vcore mod over the week end see how it works.

How good is speedfan fsb throttling software? I kinda want it to load the 166mhz fsb right at the start of windows, instead of me having to do it manually all the time.

-Nevermind, geuss I will try CPUFSB, thanks Robcy.

I finally installed it, swapped my 1.6ghz P4 willemette (piece of sh*t) with this one, and it has to be one of the best featured packed/low low price mobos i've used. Anyone know how to get Suspend to Ram on this baby? I do have one problem though, my temps were kinda high. Running the cpu at a 13.5 multiplier (wire tricked) and 100mhz fsb got me a pretty high 40 - 42C idle on a SVC GC68 w/ 32cfm fan. Forgot to mention its a new T-bred B chip with a low 1.5V rating and used a ok layer of AS3, so it should run cool but it isn't. I might have to reseat the hsf because those temps are much higher than what my GC68 usually gets.

Your cpu temp is fine. I wouldn't mess with the heatsink. My xp2000 runs at 45-56 celcius.
