ECS K7S5A and Athlon XP 1700

Frys has the ECS K7S5a and an Athlon XP 1700 for $149. Will the XP processor work on this board with PC 133 SDRAM? Im thinking of getting this board for a friend whos wife is too cheap to let him get something decent.....

Yeah, if it was for me I would opt for the PC 2100 but his wife is cheap and wont even let him spend the $149. He has an AMD K6-2 500 right now.

Be carefull and make sure you keep the receipt if you buy the RAM at Fry's. The ECS MB is sometimes picky about RAM it will accept and sometimes the memory from Fry's isn't the best. You could probably save money and a headache by ordering from Crucial. No problems with it and the ECS board.

He already has the RAM. It is Frys RAM and it seems to be working well in his curent setup. I know what you mean about Frys RAM.

Whatever brand and from whoever the RAM is, never go without a thorough memtest86 grilling. www.memtest86.com

There's so much defective RAM on the shelves today, and also enough slightly flaky stuff in old systems that are too slow to trigger any symptoms. You wouldn't be the first to move a stick of RAM from an old system to an Athlon board and fine that it isn't as good as you thought.

I put together a system for a co-worker using this board. It started out as a Duron system & I just put in a XP1700 for him. He is using 384mb PC133. The system is stable. With a GeForce 2 GTS-V video card, it is a nice & inexpensive gaming machine for his kids.

I used non brand name two stick PC133 128MB each and it runs very great..no problem.

2 weeks ago I bought new two stick 256MB PC2100 DDR 266, it runs bit faster than PC133.

it runs bit faster than PC133.
Wouldn't the main reason for it running a bit faster be that you upped the amount from 256 MB to 512 MB PLUS you changed to DDR. I would think that doubling your RAM might have had the biggest effect.

I wound up getting a FIC AN11 Stealth and an XP 1500 for myself for $115 from FRYs since they were out of the ECS board. They had a bunch of the FIC boards so I figured id try one and see how it works before stuffing one into my friends machine. I also opted (or rather had to get) DDR since the FIC board doesn't work with PC 133 SDRAM. If the FIC works our ill give my friend my Celeron 866 stuff.
