Looks like my abit kt7-raid is dead so I am in the market for a budget mobo/cpu combo. I came across an ECS K7S5A and XP 1800 combo over at ncix.com for $257 canadian.. around $160usd.. it also comes with the hs/fan. Do you think this would be a good combo to buy? seems like a great price

We use the K7S5A for our basline systems. SD-RAM with K7S5A and Duron 1300 or DDR with K7S5A and XP 1800+. We're averageing 2 Duron's and 3 1800+'s a week in this combination.

Thats a pretty good price. I suggest you go for it, but I think it would be a better buy with a 1600+ as they overclock quite well and should be cheaper.

Better deal at the same site is to buy the retail cpu (includes HSF) for $155 and the mobo for $90.

Total = $245

Or you can get the Asus A7V266-C with KT266A chipset very slightly higher in price than the K7S5A but with a faster chipset and overclocking capabilities (if you want to overclock that is).

Newegg is selling the K7S5A for $53 with free Fedex saver shipping, and the OEM 1800XP for $79, again with free shipping. The 2000XP is only $103 (OEM). I don't know about shipping rates to Canada, but I think Newegg beats this deal.

BTW - I have the K7S5A and an XP1700 - I love the setup, and a 300 watt PS is doing fine (but I don't OC).

Either way, you'll get a great setup with this board and an 1800.

i just bought this combo from canada computers:

AOpen AK77-333 KT333 w/ USB 2.0 and 6-channel Avance Audio via Realtek (better than c-media...hardware? equilizer built into the drivers)
Athlon XP 1800+

Total: 119+152 = 271

i don't know, but i've used both the K7S5A and now the AK77 and the AK77 is definitely the nicer board...of course...and u only pay 30 more - u lose lan, but gain USB 2.0 (comes w/ four ports, capable of four more via onboard headers) and 6-channel audio.

otherwise the k7s5a is still a solid board

That's a good combo ('specially if you get a Thoroughbred).

But $257 seems high. Checkout RB Computing or ShopRBC (Nepean/Bells Corners).

ECS K7S5A: $99
1800+ Retail: $139 (130 OEM)

Total: $238 (Save $20 ..... upgrade the HSF or get some CDRs, etc....)
