Ecotec Engine

The article goes through all the steps they took to get it up to 750hp and what they changed. I thought it was pretty interesting.

I came across this because I have a 2.2L Ecotec engine in my 2003 GrandAm. So far, I have heard lots of great things about this engine. It's been out for a few years, and I thought I would share. Here are the specs on the 2.2L Ecotec (close to the one GM Racing modified).

GM 2.2L Ecotec (L61) Specs

Block: Cast Aluminum

Cylinder Head: Cast Aluminum

Displacement: 2.2L (2189cc)

Compression Ratio: 10.0:1

Bore x Stroke: 86.00 x 94.60mm

Valve Configuration: Dual Overhead Camshafts (4 valves per cylinder)

Horsepower: 140 @ 5600 rpm
Torque: 150 @ 4000 rpm

The GM Racing team set about to find the outer limits of an Ecotec the old fashioned way -- by progressively blowing more nitrous through it on an engine dyno until something broke. Then repairing the engine with stronger parts (sending any damaged ports to a lab for forensic analysis), and pushing on until the next weakest link died and went to Hell. And so on.

OK, I know the line of work I'll be going into.

That would just be so fscking cool. 😀

Still reading... awesome article.
However, as the Ecotec pushed through 283 hp at 4400 rpm, all four connecting rods simultaneously failed catastrophically and smashed through the side of the block.

😀

Yowza.. all 4 at the same time.

Where have you been? The Ecotec has been destroying the competition for drag racing. They had to add on more weight to the drag car to compensate for competition.

its for momentum transfer so that wen the front starts to lift, even though it is fwd the front stays down. no matter wat, a car will lean back when starting.

Love this quote: "We finally made 370-375 hp on nitrous," says Bothwell, "but the engine was really pissed off."

You know you're a car guy when the engine is personified. 😀

Indeed. 😀

The new turbo Ecotec immediately cranked out 350 hp at 7000 rpm on 2 psi boost,

Nice. But those are some pretty hardcore mods they've done already. Too bad they don't give us an idea of cost.

Well the ecotec motor was made for a ALL-ROUND design. From economy to performance. The new Pontiac Sol. will have a supped up version with a option for a supercharger.

The car replacing the Chevy Cav and Pontiac Sunfire, Cobalt, will also have 3 different ecotec motors.

Wasnt the ecotec an Vauxhuall designed diesel common rail engine..
Ofcourse vauxhual is owned by GM.. so i guess GM had some input in it.

The new turbo Ecotec was defiantly responsive: GM Racing set idle at 1800 rpm, and if you punched it quick, the unloaded engine would blow completely through the 10K rev-limiter in less than a tenth of a second.

That's a pretty interesting article! 🙂

6.14 HP/CI. That is insane. My old truck would have been at 2996 HP by that point.
