Economy car VS '08 Prius

Its a well made car I just find it ugly, I'm waiting for full electric

This is mostly my attitude, though the savings at the pump is nice too. However my car was bought used, so my savings was more instant as well as having a higher mpg rating. Just finished a 2000 mile road trip @ 70 mpg.

Wholeheartedly agree with you.... I am amazed how many people buy one to "save money on gas" yet don't take into account the extra thousands they paid for the prius to begin with.

If you want to save money get a 90's metro, similar mpg and cheap to buy 😛

People do want to save on Gas, but still need a decent car. Even Jeep mentioned the difference in Quality/Luxury. People can save money and still have a very nice car, enter the Prius.

Please keep in mind that there is a huge difference between wanting to save gas and save money via gas. If you're looking to save gas, then a prius makes sense because it will use less gas. However if you're looking to save money via gas, then you will be disappointed. The prius is certinaly not a luxury car by any means. The quality is higher than average (from what I've read) but the quality of parts that they use are still nowhere near a real luxury car. Drive a prius then hop into a middle of the line lexus and you'll see what I mean.

I'm just trying to point out that people may want to save Gas or $$ on Gas, but that's not their only criteria. They usually want something similar to what they already have, just more Fuel Efficient. Most Prius Owners probably already owned a car in that Price range and their Fuel Consumption was probably much worse.

My parents replaced a Pontiac Aztec with the 2008 Prius. They lost 4wd and a little clearance and actually gained cargo and rear passenger space. They also went from 25 mpg to 50 mpg. Both vehicles new were in the same price ballpark.

The Prius was never billed as an economy car. I'm not sure why it get's brought up again and again on this forum as if it was. Perhaps they mistake fuel economy with economic economy.

In hindsight Toyota should have branded the Prius with a Lexus badge.. this would've shut up the majority of the idiots blabbering about time to break even nonsense.

This is why I was going to get one. It's the reason the 2 people at my job got. When I shopped for one, gas was over $4 a gallon, and my job was relocating, so my TL had to go. At the time, it would have taken 4 years before the Prius would have caught up to the Jetta TDI in overall cash spent.

If you spend 20 grand on 4 cylinder accord instead of a 14 grand accent then it takes you 14 years instead of just 7 to recoup your costs.

I don't think the accord would ever recoup the extra it cost 😕

Why the hell are we talking about recouping cost on vehicles anyway? They're liabilities, not investments...they only depreciate unless they reach collectible status, which not all models ever do. Those that do do so decades down the line where inflation has wiped out any meaningful increase in buying power from the car's "appreciated" value.

There are three ways to make money off of cars, and none of them involve ownership:

1) Service/Repair/Customization/Restoration
2) Dealership
3) Transportation Services (i.e. cab/limo/chaffeur/hearse/etc.)

Other than that, cars are expensive toys. Just like PCs.

If you read any other Prius threads, you will see people say "Hey I save a bunch of money on gas with my Prius" and the typical response is "If you're just trying to save money, then buy brand x econo car for $10K"

My point is that yes, if you are just trying to save money by buying a Prius, you are better off getting an economy car. The mind set is/used to be, "Hey I'll buy the more expensive Prius and I'll save so much money on gas that It'll more than make up for the extra expense"

By the way, my Prius is a package 2. Not the high end version, which I belive is a package 6.

The Prius is best for city driving with lots of stop and go (or stuck in a jam for 45 minutes), rather than highway driving.

other than size and electronic gadgetry it's a pretty cheap car. beam suspension out back, cheap plastic everywhere, etc.

The electric motor can produce quite a bit of torque. If I remember correctly, It's there more to protect the drivetrain than for occupant safety.
