The point is that many people say they purchase a Prius for to save money.
If you just want to save money, even a slightly better equipped economy car will save more money than a Prius.
Wholeheartedly agree with you.... I am amazed how many people buy one to "save money on gas" yet don't take into account the extra thousands they paid for the prius to begin with.
If you want to save money get a 90's metro, similar mpg and cheap to buy 😛
Sigh. /facepalm
People do want to save on Gas, but still need a decent car. Even Jeep mentioned the difference in Quality/Luxury. People can save money and still have a very nice car, enter the Prius.
Please keep in mind that there is a huge difference between wanting to save gas and save money via gas. If you're looking to save gas, then a prius makes sense because it will use less gas. However if you're looking to save money via gas, then you will be disappointed. The prius is certinaly not a luxury car by any means. The quality is higher than average (from what I've read) but the quality of parts that they use are still nowhere near a real luxury car. Drive a prius then hop into a middle of the line lexus and you'll see what I mean.
I'm just trying to point out that people may want to save Gas or $$ on Gas, but that's not their only criteria. They usually want something similar to what they already have, just more Fuel Efficient. Most Prius Owners probably already owned a car in that Price range and their Fuel Consumption was probably much worse.

I want one, but am not stupid enough to think it saves much money. It saves fuel/energy (makes me feel less guilty about stop'n'go), I could care less about money (which is odd). Also, it has a nice image, awesome design and good size. If I wanted to save money, I'd get a Fit or Yaris.

The Prius was never billed as an economy car. I'm not sure why it get's brought up again and again on this forum as if it was. Perhaps they mistake fuel economy with economic economy.
In hindsight Toyota should have branded the Prius with a Lexus badge.. this would've shut up the majority of the idiots blabbering about time to break even nonsense.

but you are comparing it to an Accent....any person who would be in the market for an Prius would not even think about an Accent, which has a sticker of 14k, but you can buy it for 11 or 12k.
And that helps the argument about hybrids being a waste of money how?
If you spend 20 grand on 4 cylinder accord instead of a 14 grand accent then it takes you 14 years instead of just 7 to recoup your costs.

I don't think the accord would ever recoup the extra it cost 😕

really depends, some people buy a prius for the "fuel savings" and I think he was trying to show the "savings" are minimal when you add in the extra cost of the car.

well he failed because he shows a higher end model of the prius going up against a baseline accent.
Here is mine, who saves more money A bmw 3 series or the prius? ZOMg the prius wins!
