I'm building a FreeNAS box, either using this or a future Kabini board, if I can find a Kabini supporting ECC.

The Jaguar-based G-series embedded APUs and Opteron X-series both support ECC. Not sure if you'll be able to find those though.

re MSI FM2-A75IA-E53

http://us.msi.com/product/mb/FM2-A75IA-E53.html#/?div=TestReport
Click on Memory report.

A Kingston DDR3 1066 4GB ECC module (available from NewEgg as a single DIMM or set of 2) is listed as compatible.

EDIT: Sorry, see above and/or below; VirtualLarry pointed out that there's no FM2 CPU/APU with ECC support.

BTW, NewEgg lists the motherboard as supporting 32GB max RAM, but MSI's site and manual say 16GB max.

BTW, I just noticed this thread was about Intel CPUs... I had found it when searching for ITX ECC and hadn't noticed. Sorry.

As far as Intel goes, HP has a new Gen8 Microserver, available with a dual-core Celeron or Pentium, with ECC support (up to 16GB, 2 slots).
They also have dual Broadcom gigE NICs, and an iLO NIC.
Newegg has the Celeron model on sale for $395 this weekend.

I'm really tempted to get one.

How sure are you about this? Since the memory controller for FM2 systems is on the CPU, and there are no FM2 CPUs that I know of that support ECC, then I don't see how this board can actually support ECC.

DOH!

Looks like you're right! :(

thanks; I almost ordered!

Yeah, I've been looking for the Kabinis (GX-series) or Opteron X-series (Koyoto) on mini-ITX but nothing yet.
I was looking because of the lower TDP, but if this is the only path to ECC, it makes finding these critical.

There's a couple Kabini ITX boards announced, but not GX-series afaik. Also, I've only seen one announcement for one with more than 2 SATA (non GX, iirc)

This is all making the HP Gen8 look much more attractive.

Thanks,
Bob
