ECC Memory and non ECC memory: compatible?

I'm updating my physical memory. I have just purchased 128 MB's memory and am not sure if it will be compatible with the ECC 72 bit memory that came with my computer. I am only an intermediate level user so I could use all the help I can get. Does anyone know the answer?

It'll work with it, but your system will receive no benefit from ECC memory if you have one stick that's not ECC.

Thanks for the late night advice. The system is an Acer Aspire (1998), but very old by today's standards. It came with 64 MB of ECC and that is what it has as of now. Considering I just bought 128 MB RAM, would I be better taking out the ECC memory and going with the new 128 MB memory or just sticking with my current set-up? Returning the 128MB is not an option as I have exceeded the month return deadline. Any good advice?

Just give it a shot - nothing'll break if they're incompatible with each other. If it doesn't work with the ECC memory, yank out the 64 and use the 128.

Sounds like good advice. Being a relatively inexperienced user I'm always wary of tinkering, but you've inspired me. I'm headed to get my Phillips Head screwdriver right now, and when I've done tearing it apart I'll let you know the result.
