and P.T. Barnum right.

Constantly seeing people bid over a price they could get from staples.com or Newegg.

How about this one (pre-sniping as I write this) :

When it can be had at Staples:

Yeah, but dude, that's a sale price. You're right in the fact that the Staples price is lower. But i'd assume that staples price went into effect today or sometime last week, that's not really enough time for people to know about a price drop. Granted, people bid on it, but i'd bet that the ebay price will be less in a week or so.

I've wondered about this myself... it seems like the ebay prices are usually higher than the same prices for new products on the 'net or even at certain B&M stores. I can understand that not everyone is a 'puter geek and knows about mwave or newegg etc, but how hard is it these days to simply use a price search engine or just visit a couple of sites to check some prices?

I'm guessing people just get caught up in the whole 'excitement' of the bidding and lose sight of the prices they should be paying for the items.

Sometimes it is worth bidding a little extra on ebay for us Alaskans because most computer shops on the net only ship UPS. Since UPS does not provide Ground shipping to Alaska, we get stuck with 2nd Day Air. On ebay, most folks will ship through the post office, often times saving us Alaskans $15 or more.

Adam Smith was not wrong. He just failed to take into account that there will be such things as the Internet in the future and that people in the modern world could be that lazy and stupid. :)

No no, Smith accounted for this.
The over bidng is a result of slow moving and imperfect information.

Thats not it, what it is you people like to win. Your bidding against someone and you want to win your want to beat the other person.
I call it the Win Factor.

If that's the case, then why don't we all sell our stuff and make tons of money :D

Half the stuff in places like Staples is on some kind of sale at any given time. That's their operating motto.
And there are better deals to be had there involving rebates and such.

That offer went on the air 3 weeks ago according to Hot Deals, so the explanation that the word hasn't spread yet doesn't really apply.
