I don't understand. If there are 5 seconds left, and someone bids, why not up the time left by 2-5 minutes or so?

Wouldn't it be better for both the buyer and seller? Sucks to be outbid by $1 when you would have paid $10 more than the ending price. The buyer willing to pay more loses on it, and the seller gets less money too. It's a lose lose situation, is it not?

There is no "going once, going twice, sold!" bah!

Then you should have bid 10$ more to begin with ;)

EDIT: Actually, just because the auction ended at $X doesn't mean you would have won it by bidding $X + 10. The guy who won may have setup a proxy bid up to X + $1000 for all you know.

The best thing to do is just figure out the *absolute* max you are willing to pay for the item, and either proxy bid that amount, or setup a sniping program to snipe that amount at the end of the auction. I prefer the sniping approach because it eliminates the n00bs who like to bid in $5 increments in response to other's bids. By sniping, you don't give them the chance.

I don't like your idea because requiring the bidders to be at their computer at the end of every auction seems a bit ridiculous.

True story.

Bid big or go home empty handed.

The current setup encourages you to pony up your MAX bid now to prevent you from being sniped.

seems stupid not to implement that

though with the current set up, i do agree its just as simple as bidding what you are willing to pay and let it work its magic

They could still leave the option to input your absolute max and have it auto bid for you.

I can see what the OP means.

I decided I would be willing to pay 50 bucks, ebay bids on my behalf, but someone snipes it for 51 bucks. Given a "going once, going twice, etc" sorta model I would be willing to shell out 2 more bucks to get the item. I may not have picked 52 initially but i would be willing to If I knew that was the true magic number to get what I want.

that being said, I rarely am around for the end of auctions so I suppose I deserve the sniping anyway.
