no, that was probably the minimum bid increment. that person could have bid $20 over you, but it would only show 15 cents.

Did you set your bid to the maximum you were willing to pay?

If so, then you did not lose.

If not, you should have bid higher initially.

Well, not necessarily. The most I was willing to pay was $4 (plus shipping.) Now, let's say the other guy placed a bet for $3 and found it wasn't enough. Now he ups his bet to $5 and wins the calendar.

Had I sniped, his max bet would've been $3 until the last 10 seconds, and my $4 bet would've won it in the last moments.

See how that can happen? 🙂

it it was 15 cents then it was his maximum bid. minimum bid increment is 25 cents

Doesn't have to be. I've won auctions by a few cents many times, if your bid is 1cent higher than the max bid of the high bidder, it'll go through. But if it isn't and you have to put in a new bid, then the minumum bid amount comes into play.
I used to use enspie but not since they went subcription. I do it manually and love the challege and the money it can save me.

What are you guys smoking?? Sniping is the only way to buy stuff on Ebay (unless you shop at Mature audiences 😀)
Besides 3sec sniping (that's the lowest I think) you can do group sniping which is awesome for popular items.

The problem with proxy bidding is that some people get carried away and they just want the satisfaction of winning even though they could have gotten a better deal at a B&M store.

I use www.actionstealer.com. The problem with sniping software is that your PC has to be on and online. Web based sniping is more flexible in that sense.

EDIT: Its also good idea to set your max bid to same weird value (IE 21.83 instead of 21.50)

The problem is that you don't want to place any bids until just before the auction closes. The reason is that bidding early causes the price to go up. Sniping software helps you avoid this. Also, sniping software doesn't require you to baby-sit an auction.

Plus then people don't know you are interested in something. Particularly important in areas like antiques or collectables, sometimes when I'm bored I'll look for what some of the more knowledgeable bidders are going for and later I'll find out that it was actually worth a lot more.

I snipe manually too...

I haven't bought much off ebay recently, but when I was really into it.. lol.. I would have 2 or 3 windows open.. with higher and higher bids, with my password typed in.. lol.. while hitting refresh on the auction page... ready to alt-tab-enter at any moment... lol

I lost an auction once when someone outbid me literally one second before it ended. That sucked. I think they just got lucky, lol


However.... these options look interesting for the times that I won't be around when the auction ends.... 😀

At least you didn't get a negative. I did, it's buried near the first page, this happened back when eBay was just starting up so you could leave feedback without having a transaction. Something along the lines of "Not a nice person, he outbid me at the last second leaving me no chance to revise my bid" or something.
