Ebay shipping question/problem

ok I am selling a used motherboard (dfi expert) and the winning bidder won it for ~110USD.

My auction was for Canada and US only (only have those shipping prices listed)

The buyer lives in England and I told him it was a local auction.

I told him to ship it to England (Shippiing + handling + packaging + materials) would be about $95 USD.

So now, the buyer refuses to to pay, I open a claim to withdraw and he says he is still interested but wants a lower shipping price.

So what am I to do now. I did the buyer a favour by quoting him a price and he wants a lower one, even though my auction was not specified for international.

The buyer is giving me a hard time, and is telling ebay I am trying to charge him paypal fees and the whole lot (which is untrue as the only form of payment I accept ATM is paypal)

So I have relisted the item (at my expense because the claim for non-pay was withdrawn)

I have had enough of this buyer and just want to move on.


I've read here before that you can leave feedback up to like 40 days or something. Basically I have a 100% score and have never had problems with any buyers or sellers but this guy is just being a PITA.

I would like to know how you guys would deal with something like this and also what is the limit on feedback. I would like to wait to the last day and leave him negative without it impacting me.

His feedback is not 100% BTW.

no... I'm not reaming anyone. I'm using canadapost (as i am canadian). The fee's vary from 33$ (surface parcel, boat i imagine with no tracking or signature) to $104)

It's just the fact that my auction clearly state to US and CANADA and only has prices for US and CANADA.

The shipping rates I have for those are flat rate where anywhere in US will be the same price and the same with Canada.

for example, I ship to Canada for $35 CAD and US for $45 CAD... that is a reasonable cost to cover everything.

Well I'm not going to itemize everything to the last cent, but to ship something it costs me money to purchase, boxes, shipping tape, the shipping popcorn or whetever you call it to pack the item, labells/ink for printing labels, gas to drive to post office etc. just small misc. fees.


But it is not a case of me ripping him off. It's like going to a furniture store and buying a living room set, and then telling the store you don't agree with their shipping costs. I mean, If he would have asked me before he bid, I would have told him either, a) i wont ship or b) it would cost $95.. But he did neither. Plus I have to pay out of pocket ~$8 to relist the auction (a third time) which I am NOT charging him.

I am not doing this for a business.. I am just trying to get rid of extra stuff I have lying around and not lose money in the process.

Thats the problem... I filed unpaid and chose we both agreed to end but he declined the item report and said he wants it. So I cannot file another one. I have sent ebay an email explaining the situation.

How much time do I have to leave negative feedback?

I could see why the guy balked. Paying almost $100 US for a motherboard is insane. Of course it is his fault for not reading the auction. I'm glad I don't live in Canada with those kind of f'ed up shipping prices.

Hm? Okay.

Using the Canadian postal system, it looks like a 14in x 12in x 6in package weighing 4lb package from Vancouver (I picked the province furthest from England) costs about $40 CAN ($36 US) to ship by surface mail and $43 CAN ($39 US) to ship by regular air mail.

I can understand that you don't want to list out to the penny what your itemized expenses are for shippiing + handling + packaging + materials. Since I've already shown how much it would cost to ship, couldn't you just take a guess at how handling + packaging + materials will cost an additional $55 US (on top of the $39 US that it costs to air mail a 4lb package to England)??

If that's too tough, could you simply describe what "handling + packaging + materials" entails and maybe we can figure out where you're coming up with the $55 US for you??

From the Canadian postal Web site, it looks like you can get air mail for just a few US dollars more than surface mail ($36 vs. $40 for a 4lb package).

I think the OP has cleverly pointed out that one could pay up to $100+ for 2-3 business day delivery on the same package... but (as you point out) that'd be f'ed up.

there is no way I am charging $55 for handling... that is rediculous, but from my postal code, only those 3 options were available.

So offer to ship it using the "ground" option and charge him accordingly. Why wouldn't that be an option?

Let the buyer know what the shipping options are and let them choose.

Your initial shipping costs seemed high (based on responses here) and I can see why the buyer would balk.

Because the middle option $78 is the only one which includes signature and insurance. I want to protect myself, especially when sending overseas. He can always claim not to have received the item.

That helps greatly.

I was estimating the dimensions and using 2.5kg estimate and only received 3 options. I have used your dimensions and I too can see what you see .

I guess if the package is over a certain size then some options are not available and I tend to over estimate to avoid any troubles with the post office.

I guess I will need to by a scale and pull out the tape measure for exact dimensions.
