Bingo. It has nothing to do with protecting people or anything else.

What they dont include is time and mileage. The time it takes to actually package the item and the gas and mileage it takes to get it to the shipping center of choice. It can cost around $9 just in mileage for a 20 mile round trip just to deliver the package to UPS/USPS/FedEx.

The only way they would actually be able to control shipping cost is to have each auction form include LxHxW and weight and who they will use to ship. Then automatically calculate with possible bidders/winning bidders address/zip and not let them charge more than that. They can calculate cost of insurance by average $$$ of other identical items sold. This does not include handling charge etc though.

I call BS on that. What do you drive, a TANK? Even my old v8 Monza from the 70s with a carb got better milage then that, WAY better.

If it cost $9 to go 40miles pizza places would haul pizzas by bike and there be a lot less cars on the road. Hummers would come with a 4cyl and people would still complain they use to much gas at the rate you are giving.

I still see obvious over charging for shipping and handling. So I don;t know what eBay is doing, but I call BS on them as well.

i don't think they are talking about only 10 or 15 in s+h winchester. with this i think they are trying to crack down on the people charging 1 penny for their items and then 80 bucks for s+h.

Ive just recently started selling some things on ebay again after a bit of a break.

No big quantites, just getting rid of stuff around the house.

I was shocked how expensive its gotten to ship things.

I charged 9.99 shipping for a gameboy with a few games.

Shipping came to almost 11 dollars. I ate the rest. I've missed on each item of listed. I lost a total of about 10 bucks.

I feel bad, but if I list more items I am going to have to charge more.

The IRS will allow $0.445 per mile IIRC which includes gas and at that you still dont make a profit, you probably wont break even. You have to count cost of gas plus the depreciation of every mile driven.
Proof

BTW: Pizza places in my area pay a wage per hour ($6-7/hr) and you pay for your own vehicle and gas etc. Cracks me up when I see people driving trucks or suburbans thinking they are getting anywhere.

ebay only gest a percentage of the selling price and not including the shipping price? I didn't know that. I thought they just took a pecentage of the whole thing.

Paypal doesn't care what the money is for, they take a cut from the whole transaction. Now they are just being greedy and want a bigger cut on both sides. Just another reason to hate ebay and paypal.

I do more buying than selling on eBay, and have frequently been frustrated with sellers charging $10-20 per item for shipping, plus $5-7 each additional item. Some of the sellers are really over-the-top, and I hope that they are reprimanded for their outrageous attempts to bypass the system (i.e. a $0.01 auction for a pair of Oakleys + $100 shipping fee!).

I think that these auctions have extremely unreasonable shipping - $20+ for the shipping and handling of a textbook sent book rate?! Maybe $5 or even $10, but twice that?!

Right now I'm only selling one item (a pair of tickets), and am charging a $2 S&H fee, which should cover the postage, envelope, and my time.

Just because the IRS allows that much does not mean it cost that much. And if you are shipping that much then you do know Fed-Ex/UPS/DHL/USPS/etc... will come to you. So that kills any argument that your car is what is adding in to the shipping.

Actually unless you ship more than a certain amount each week those places charge a fee to come pick it up unless they are already at your address. (except USPS) but then again, unless you are using flat box rate and have stamp labels at home you still have to go and weigh the item at their location.

BTW: It actually costs more than $0.445 to drive most vehicles. If not all.

They should either require sellers charge the real shipping cost or give free shipping. They calculate it into the price shown we searching for items.
