This is yet another fallacy. The only reason why ignorance is not an excuse is because the information is available to them, however what if they don't know where to find the information or it doesn't exist? Lets go back to the old lady; she didn't even know about email scams, so if she didn't know it existed then how could she know what to look for? That is what this thread is for: to inform. It was created so that the people who are aware of it would be reminded (by the title), to provide the exact verbatim of the email (for those who are curious), and for those who don't know to educate themselves.
To not inform yourself when you know the information exists would apply to ignorance not being an excuse.
However, if they are unaware of the information then you can not even talk about ignorance because it does not apply. (don't make me bust out with the thinking outside the box arguement)
