THE PURPOSE OF THIS POST IS TO INFORM, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM POSTING NEGATIVE COMMENTS

got this in my email today, it requested my username and password so I'm thinking this is a scam

Dear Customer,

We are currently performing regular maintenance of our security measures. Protecting the security of your eBay account is our primary concern, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please confirm your account ownership by entering the information below. eBay Community.

Your User ID is displayed throughout the Site and is therefore available to the public. All of your activities on the Site will be identifiable to your User ID. Other people can see your bids, items that you have purchased in the past, your feedback rating and associated comments, your postings on the Site, and so on. Therefore, if you associate your name with your User ID, the people you have revealed your name to will be able to personally identify your eBay activities. We also provide a number of ways to allow other users to find out more about you and your site activities, such as our feature that allows users to quickly see all of the items you are offering at the time. If you are involved in a transaction, we have features that allow other users to view your email address and obtain your contact and shipping information to help complete the transaction.

With the graphics and everything this looks real and the email is from ebay@safeharbor.com, so what do you guys think? Ebay never asks for a password, so I'm questioning the validity of this email. Did anyone get one like me?

Whoa, please calm down... I told you that I already suspected it. I just wanted to share with everyone here what I got because in the past I've seen plenty of ebay scams posted here.

Sorry if I agitated you, but others could benefit.

This sh!t shows up every week. Ebay never asks for username/password, THEY ALREADY KNOW IT.

That said, check the email headers, and you'll see its not really from Ebay.

you guys really shock me with your attitudes, so what if you already know, the point of this post is to inform those who don't and to provide the contents of the email so that people can identify it right away when they see it. If you don't like it then please shut your pie-hole, don't post, and continue your neffing elsewhere.

I know you're just trying to help, but the vast majority of people that know about these forums obviously know how to identify scams. After all, everyone here on AT is a uber-nerd anyways, so there's so many scams now we are kind of apathetic. :) But thanks for yet another reminder.

m4h I actually did do a search and all of those threads either are irrelevant to my post, have different scams than the one I'm posting, or don't include any email text whatsoever. Like I said in my above post... this is an informative post, if you know it already then good, but some people want to read what the scam said, or maybe some doesn't know and I alerted them. The purpose of this thread is not to attract the people who don't care and want to throw off their mouths.

This is informative not persuasive so if you are informed then shut up.

Well, if you were so Enlightened and/or Informed, why did you ask our opinion on things?

Look at it this way - us running our mouths in here keeps your thread healthily bumped up at the top of the forum.

Fvcking THINK!

If any email asks for your password.....well, you deserve whatever you get for supplying it

Its clear that you are one to jump to conclusions. Did you even read those other threads?

the entitle "Man, ebay, HELP! I think this guy's trying to scam me!" that M4H mentioned doesn't even have to do with an email requesting username and password! its all about some guy's trouble with a buyer. You need to stop and think before you click that post button because you obviously are not thinking before you post.

And that comment about deserving it if you do it doesn't make sense... if people were better informed then they wouldn't do it, I know alot of honest folks that have been screwed by similar tricks and if the authorities had an attitude like you, then emails like this will proliferate even more. Information is the key, and just because you already know doesn't mean that you should ruin other peoples opportunity for educating themselves. In that light I'd say you were selfish for posting what you did.

It's clear you obviously haven't read them either. Esp. if you think your message was at all any kind of news.

Thousands of these emails fly around every day and a few times a week some junior cub reporter thinks he's the first to ever get one and posts a thread without bothering to search properly. And, searching on eBay does find a thread that mentions an email from Safe Harbor at eBay asking for User ID and password.

Again...if an email asks for your user ID and PASSWORD, it's a SCAM

Anyone who falls for it deserves what they get.

OMG, DUDE, did you hear about this email scam? It's BRAND NEW, I SWEAR. These people from Nigeria say that they've got a really rich family member who's royalty, and they ask for yo- Hey, what's with the gun and bull- Hey! Ow! OW! That one went in!

Anyone who falls for it deserves what they get.

Anyone really? So are you saying that little net-illiterate grandma who lives down my street and did something similar deserves her credit card being stolen and used illegally? Are you saying that it was her fault and that she should have to pay for the thousands of dollars worth of goods purchased?

The only thing people deserve is what they are fully consciously aware of.

This is my last post in response to you because I've decided that you are emotional and not adhering to logic inorder to formulate your claims. I can point to numberous logical fallicies in your posts inaddition to the one quoted above. Now go away, cause this thread is obviously not for you.

Yes, it's her fault for being so naive. At least credit card protection would keep her from having to pay anything (unlike if that little grandma got scammed on a new roof installation or something.)

The only thing people deserve is what they are fully consciously aware of.
Then they should be consciously aware of any Terms of Agreement to which they click that ol' Accept button. Ignorance is no excuse.

No, you go away as this forum is already overloaded with "Sky is falling" posts.

RIGorous1, thanks for the heads up. No Buzz words I'm used to in chain letter/scams etc. Not that I'd even reply to an unsolocited email let alone give them anything. but some may find it useful.

Don't let these Geniuses bother you. Mensa members are extremly difficult sometimes.

This is yet another fallacy. The only reason why ignorance is not an excuse is because the information is available to them, however what if they don't know where to find the information or it doesn't exist? Lets go back to the old lady; she didn't even know about email scams, so if she didn't know it existed then how could she know what to look for? That is what this thread is for: to inform. It was created so that the people who are aware of it would be reminded (by the title), to provide the exact verbatim of the email (for those who are curious), and for those who don't know to educate themselves.

To not inform yourself when you know the information exists would apply to ignorance not being an excuse.

However, if they are unaware of the information then you can not even talk about ignorance because it does not apply. (don't make me bust out with the thinking outside the box arguement)

Also, your adherance to the agreement box is ridiculous... so if microsoft has a condition in their agreement policy that says that they own you forever, and you agree to it, does that mean that you are owned by microsoft? NO. people put all kinds of illegal stuff in contracts all the time, that is what the courts are for. But if you can't find them you deserve it right? (Using your arguement against you)

You should really stop posting because I'm making you look quite foolish...

I will say again...your post brought nothing new here. Just another variation on a scam as old as AOL and one that's been posted here what seems like a couple of times a day lately. Anyone who falls for it deserves it but they'll learn not to do it again.
