lol I have a 99% feedback. I think some people need to take economics and reading comprehension.

Oh, we understand. It's just that some of us HAVE taken economics, and know that if a company such as ebay makes no money due to everyone circumventing the rules and not paying their listing fees, it won't be around for very long.

Also, while we know that the final price to us is the same, it's very annoying to see "wow, 99 cents, so cheap! Oh, $49 shipping...bastard" over and over.

In short, stick to craigslist.

its odd

$49 item and 0.99c shipping and ill think nice, worth looking at

if i see 0.99c item and $49 shipping i usually dont even bother just because of the shipping. yeah im paying the same price, but its that natural reaction to seeing a shipping price that high that puts me off with out thinking about it.

What happens when 2 people get in a bid war over a 99 cent item and then the winner finds out another 50 dollars is tacked onto shipping?

It also alienates bidders because they know if there's a dispute and they need a refund, they are only going to get the 99 cents back. To me it looks like someone who is selling crap and doesn't mind refunding money on returns because they make all the money they need on "shipping".

Take in $49.99, ship crap. Refund buyer who complains, pay out 99 cents.

DOH that ruins my plan. I'm sure there are other alternatives.

BTW I got an ebay message from someone asking if I would sell a 1gb sodimm for .99 + $4.90 for shipping. WTF these people don't understand the total value. I've never ripped off anyone nor has it ever crossed my mind but for some reason I just don't feel sorry for ebay if I do this. It's akin to asking me if I feel sorry that an Exxon executive has to pay $3.40 a gallon for premium.

Is it worth having your account suspended indefinitely and losing your 99% feedback if they discover what you're doing?

Lots of "if you don't like ebay's fees, then don't use them" answer, but the reality is that ebay has a monopoly on the auction / direct market right now, with no legitimate competition in sight. I don't have any problem with anyone finding ways around their policies to avoid getting ripped off.......

So what if they don't have much competition? If you don't have a problem with people finding ways around their policies, then you shouldn't have a problem with ebay suspending accounts for not following the policy.

I'm still confused by your topic title. Why would I pay $148 for something that is worth $50?

He forgot a decimal point. I think the OP and Michael Bolton should get together to discuss those kind of mundane details. 😉

Don't you see the irony that what he did to you is very similar to what you're doing to eBay? They offer a service at a particular price, but you expect them to give you that service at a substantially reduced price just because you don't feel like paying their price.

Yup.

Not only that, you'll be inviting the confused complaints from people who didn't know well enough to look at your shipping charge beforehand

Agreed. I avoid auctions like those that sell the item at a low cost but charge two arms, two legs, a pair of kidneys, and a lung for shipping.

Why? On the buyer side, $49.99 shipped is $49.99 shipped.

It's an issue between the seller and Ebay

most people aren't morons and realize that RAM is tiny and costs hardly anything to ship.

stop being a dick and do it the normal way. you save like a dollar or so doing it your way that is against the TOS of ebay.

is $1 really that much to you?

I miss the days when eBay was reasonable to sell on. I haven't sold on there for more than a year. go Craig's List!!!! (its just works better in a larger cities)

You're clearly trying to circumvent the ebay rules, however Ebay has been going insane in taking listings down for 'excessive' shipping and handling when it clearly isn't the case.

thats normal. most people will do that.

they know the items price and what shipping should be around. so when they see a $50 item with $1 shipping its a good deal.

when they see a $50 item at $1 with $49 shipping most will wonder about the item and the ethics of teh seller. They will figure its not worth the risk and move on.

It's much better than listing it as $49 BIN and .99 shipping. This way your insertion fee is lower as is you final fee. Problem is people would buy it now at $49 and all I get are questions on the .99 BIN listings. Am I wrong in listing it this way?

It's wrong in the sense that it's a violation of the eBay TOS, but I don't think it's criminally wrong or anything...

Hmm, I've e-mailed ebay about people who do this. Their reply was basically that sellers can set whatever shipping and handling fee they wish.

lol, one time the guy was being such an ass about paying "exact shipping" that I ended up dropping it off at Mailboxes etc and having them pack and ship it. Came out to be more than what I was charging but apparently he didn't have a problem with it because it was exactly what I paid to have it shipped. Even got a positive feedback out of it too, never figured that one out.

Against eBay TOS but I personally don't have a problem with it. I always take into consideration the total cost anyways.

It annoys me when people charge like $12 for shipping and when I receive the item, the postage says something like $2.30. I understand that one needs to recoup the costs of the shipping materials and whatnot, but come on $12 on something that cost $2.30 to actually ship?

I think it's fair to charge actual shipping + $5 for materials/gas to the post office (if costs more than $2 of gas to drive to the post office, then you should consider using pre-paid shipping labels/on-site pick-up).
