has this been a new thing? I tried to cancel one years ago and it wouldn't let me. said it was final or some crap like that

I used it because I meant to type $100 and I typed $1000 accidently. Obviously, my bid became the top one. It let me change my bid to what I meant to bid in the first place. Interestingly, because I misbid first, it allowed me to see what the other bidder's top amount was.

I think they do make allowances for if you want to bid but bid the wrong amount.

I didn't know they let you flat out retract your bid.

I think it used to by offering much more flexible choices than they now have. Now I think it is intended more for accidents like mine rather than wanting to remove your bid entirely.

I have retracted a few bids over the years(all because I changed my mind, although I selected wrong amount entered as my reason).
